The air was dense with anxiety as glass pieces scattered over the floor. The Shadow Beasts' guttural snarls were thunderous, and their luminous eyes cut through the darkness beyond. Panic washed over me, but Lucian's forceful voice shocked me out of it.
"Stay behind me," he said, changing into a protective posture. Caleb, to my amazement, stepped forward with his jaw gritted.
"I can fight," he stated resolutely. Lucian looked at him, a shadow of skepticism on his features.
"You'd better be sure about that," he remarked abruptly.
"These aren't ordinary enemies."
Before Caleb could react, the first of the animals charged through the smashed window, its dark body twisting unnaturally as it closed the gap. Lucian moved at superhuman speed, intercepting it in mid-leap. His hands gleamed softly, and when he struck, the thing vanished into a puff of black smoke.
Another beast followed, and then another, their motions unpredictable and chaotic. Caleb grabbed a nearby iron poker from the fireplace and flung it at an approaching beast, landing a strike that knocked it down. I watched in stunned stillness, my heart pumping. I wasn't a warrior, and the turmoil all around me was overpowering.
But when a beast burst through the threshold and focused its luminous eyes on me, something inside me snapped. My wolf awoke for the first time since my transition, weak but present. A wave of primal force passed through me, and I reflexively raised my hand. To my surprise, a pulse of light burst from my palm, striking the thing and making it flinch. Lucian looked at me, his eyes wide with amazement.
"What was that?"
"I—I don't know," I said, staring at my quivering hand.
"There's more to you than meets the eye," he said quietly, almost admiringly. The brawl raged on, and the cabin became a battleground.
Caleb battled with a tenacity I'd never seen before, and his moves were precise and calculated. Lucian was a force of nature, his attacks leaving no room for the monsters to recover.
But they kept coming. For every beast that fell, two others appeared to take its place. The cabin groaned under the strain, and I realized we couldn't hold out for much longer.
"We need to get out of here," I yelled over the pandemonium. Lucian nodded, his face stern.
"There is a tunnel beneath the cabin." It leads to a river. Caleb appeared skeptical.
"A tunnel?"
"Why didn't you mention this earlier?" "This isn't the time for questions," Lucian growled.
"Follow me." He led us to a trapdoor hidden under a rug. He pulled it open and beckoned for me to go first. I hesitated, looking at Caleb.
"Go, Amara," Caleb said.
"We'll cover you."
Reluctantly, I descended into the tunnel, the air wet and chilly. Lucian followed, then Caleb, closing the trapdoor behind him. The sounds of the battle above died away as we came down, leaving just the steady trickle of water to reverberate along the narrow hole. The sole source of light in the pitch-black tunnel was the faintly lighting moss on the walls. Despite the challenging terrain, Lucian led the way with steady steps. I was closely followed by Caleb, whose presence was both comforting and unsettling.
"What's at the end of this tunnel?”
I inquired, my tone barely above a whisper.
"A safe house," Lucian answered.
"It's warded against creatures like those."
I nodded, but the dread in my chest did not subside. The prospect of being confined beneath, with danger looming ahead, was oppressive. As we went, Caleb broke the silence.
"Amara, about earlier…"
"Not now," I said hurriedly, not wanting to relive the grief he had caused. He sighed, but did not press the topic. We traveled in hushed stillness until we reached the end of the tunnel.
A huge wooden door stopped our path, adorned with exquisite carvings that gleamed softly. Lucian put his fingers against the door, which creaked open to reveal a small chamber.
The safe house was basic but practical, with a few cots, a table, and shelves stocked with supplies. A slight hum of electricity permeated the air, and I could feel the defensive shields Lucian had indicated.
"We'll be safe here for now," Lucian murmured, closing the door behind us.
Caleb sat on one of the cots, shoulders down.
"What were those things?" "And why are they after her?" Lucian hesitated, his gaze shifting to mine.
"It's not just her emotions they're drawn to," he finally said.
"There is something else.
"Something powerful." I scowled, bewilderment mingling with fear.
"What are you talking about?" He looked at me for a moment before speaking.
"The energy you utilized previously is not typical for a werewolf. "It's something more."
"I don't understand," I replied, shaking my head.
"You're different, Amara," he whispered softly. "And that difference makes you a target."
Before I could react, a tremendous blast reverberated around the chamber. The door shook violently, sending a shudder down my spine.
"They've found us," Lucian stated, his voice tense.
The thumping became louder and more relentless. Whatever wards were protecting the safe home wouldn't last long.
"What do we do?" I inquired, worry coming into my voice. Lucian's jaw stiffened.
"We fight."
"No," Caleb replied firmly. "We can't handle them all.
"There must be another way." Lucian hesitated, his gaze shifting to mine. "There is, but it's risky."
"What is it?" I inquired, desperation overpowering my fear.
"There's a ritual," he explained. "It could strengthen your abilities and give you the strength to beat them off.
However, it is risky, and there is no assurance that it will work. I gulped hard, the weight of his words settling in.
"What happens if it doesn't work?" Lucian's expression hardened.
"Then it could destroy you." The banging on the door became louder, and fractures appeared in the wood. Time was running out.
"I'll do it," I answered, my voice firm despite the panic rising in my gut.
Caleb grasped my arm, his eyes widening with horror.
"Amara, you can't—" "I don't have a choice," I replied, cutting him off.
"If we don't try, we're all dead." Lucian nodded, his face stern.
"There is no time to waste. Let us begin.
As he began to prepare the ritual, the door cracked, revealing the blazing eyes of the Shadow Beasts in the darkness beyond.
