CHAPTER 5: THE MASTER OF SHADOWS

1133 Words
The huge apparition stood before us, its crimson eyes shining like twin suns in the darkness. Its presence was oppressive, and the air around it was filled with hostility. The Shadow Beasts were nothing compared to this. This was their lord, a beast from nightmares. Lucian stood in front of me, taking a protective position. "This was what I feared. "Amara, stay behind me." "No," I answered, my voice more composed than I felt. "This is my fight." The creature let forth a deep, guttural chuckle, which echoed throughout the room. "How brave," it exclaimed, its voice a terrifying mix of whispers and growls. "The fledgling thinks she can challenge me." The remarks wounded me deeply, but I refused to show my fear. The golden energy within me surged, sending a scorching heat across my entire body. I took a step forward, ignoring Caleb and Lucian's cautionary stares. "What do you want?" I demanded, my voice echoing in the chamber. The creature c****d its head, a horrible smile spreading across its shadowy features. "Yes, of course, Your power, Your essence, "You belong to me." "That's not going to happen," I murmured, bringing the energy to my hands. The creature chuckled again. "You have no idea what you are, do you? "A stray wolf is playing with fire." "What am I, then?" I challenged myself, taking another step forward. "You are the key," it whispered, its tone full of malice. "A conduit for the ancient force that will bring the world to its knees. Surrender now, and I might spare your companions." The ultimatum hung in the air, like a dagger ready to strike. I looked at Lucian and Caleb, their expressions set with purpose. I would not give myself up to this monster. "Come and take me," I murmured, the energy in my hands growing brighter. The beast bellowed, shaking the foundation of the safe house. It lunged, its huge figure moving with unnatural speed. I reacted instantly, raising my palms to release a blast of golden light. The energy impacted the thing, driving it back, but it appeared unfazed. Its dark form rippled and reformed nearly quickly. "You'll have to do better than that," it scoffed. Lucian and Caleb entered the fight, launching coordinated and persistent strikes. Lucian's blade slashed through the shadows, and Caleb transformed into a wolf, his massive teeth biting at the thing. However, their attempts were fruitless. The master of shadows was too powerful, its shape altering and renewing quicker than they could attack. I concentrated, attempting to channel the energy within me. The power was present, a roaring flame ready to be unleashed, but it was wild and untamed. I needed control. "Amara, now would be a good time to figure out how to use that power!" Lucian yelled as the beast launched him into the wall. "I'm trying!" I yelled back, frustration rising to the surface. The creature returned its focus to me, its eyes narrowing. "Can't you control it? You're just a spark, quickly extinguished." Its insult sparked something within me—a rebellion that burned brighter than my terror. I closed my eyes to block out the cacophony around me. I concentrated on the energy, the rhythm of my heartbeat, and the regular rise and fall of my breath. When I opened my eyes, the world seemed to move slowly. The beast was mid-lunge, with its claws inches from my face. When I raised my hands, the energy surged in a wave of golden light, filling the space. The creature howled as the light hit it, its shape flickering and breaking apart. The shadows writhed, attempting to reform, but the light remained relentless, burning through their essence. For a time, it appeared that I had won. The creature's form vanished, leaving only silence in its place. But then the ground shook beneath us, and a terrible chuckle echoed throughout the hall. "You think this is over?" The voice hissed, disembodied but no less threatening. "This is only the beginning." The walls of the room began to crumble as the creature's presence lasted. "We have to get out of here!" Caleb exclaimed, resuming his normal form. Lucian grabbed my arm and pulled me toward the exit. "Amara, whatever you did worked—for now. But we have to move!" We barely made it out as the safe house collapsed behind us, leaving a plume of dust and debris in the night air. I sank on the grass, my chest heaving as I attempted to catch my breath. "What was that thing?" I inquired, my tone barely above a whisper. Lucian’s expression was bleak. "The master of shadows is an ancient being that predates all of us. It's linked to the power within you, like a moth to a flame." "Why me?" I inquired, annoyance and dread mixed in my voice. "Because you're the last of your kind," Lucian remarked, his voice full of meaning. I stared at him, my thoughts racing. "The last of what?" Before he could respond, a loud howl rang in the distance. It wasn't a wolf's howl, but something darker and more sinister. "They're coming," Caleb remarked, his voice full of panic. Lucian nodded. "And next time, they will not simply send their boss. "They will send an army." The weight of his words fell on me, making the truth of our situation sink in. We were running out of time, and I still had no idea what power I possessed or why it made me a target. The terrible cry resonated throughout the woodland, slicing through the darkness like a blade. The sound sounded far away but close enough to send every nerve in my body on alert. "They've found us," Caleb replied, his voice low and frantic. Lucian turned, his golden eyes shining in the darkness. "We have to move. Now." I was already on my feet, trembling with exhaustion but fueled by adrenaline. The fall of the safe house left us exposed and unprotected, and I couldn't shake the feeling that something far worse than the master of shadows was after us now. "Where do we go?" I inquired, fighting to keep my voice calm. "To the mountains," Lucian murmured, gesturing toward the deep woodland ahead. "The terrain will slow them down, and we'll have the advantage of higher ground." Caleb nodded in accord. "But we need to be silent. They'll utilize the shadows to track us. The three of us dived into the jungle, the canopy overhead devouring the moonlight. With every snap of a twig beneath our feet giving a possible signal to our pursuers, every step felt risky. Only the distant cries of nocturnal animals and the rustle of leaves broke the deafening silence. But one thing was certain: the war was far from done.
