Chapter 7 The Resolve to Escape

996 Words
As Daniel was about to release Amy, Lena couldn't help but interject. "She only hurt her face. I almost died." "But you didn't die, and her face is actually injured." Rosa replied, her sweetly innocent expression masking her malicious intent. Lena wanted to point out who had thrown the first punch, but she held back, seeing Daniel let go of Amy. Daniel accepted Rosa's explanation and released Amy. It seemed that Lena's life had never mattered to him as much as Rosa's. "Darling, I knew you were the best!" Rosa cooed, snuggling into Daniel's chest. Daniel didn't push her away. Instead, he gently patted Rosa's back, his eyes full of tenderness. Watching their intimacy, Lena felt like an outsider. Her heart, which had been pounding wildly for Daniel, now was crushed, the pain making her almost unable to stand. Why did she have to witness her husband flirting with another woman? Lena wanted to ask, but her throat felt blocked, unable to produce any sound. "I haven't seen you in a while and have a lot to say. Let's find a place to talk." Rosa said, linking her arm with Daniel's as they walked away, ignoring the presence of others. Amy lay on the ground, lowering her head as they passed, hoping Daniel would forget about her. But Daniel stopped beside her. "I know I was wrong..." Amy quickly admitted. "Wrong about what?" Daniel asked coldly. "I shouldn't have attacked Mrs. Crother," Amy admitted, realizing how deeply she had misjudged the situation. Daniel clearly cared more about Lena than rumors suggested. "From now on, anyone who dares to harm Mrs. Crother will have their limbs broken and be thrown to the wolves." Daniel declared, his cold gaze sweeping the crowd, causing everyone to lower their heads in fear. Finally, he looked at Amy. "As for you, your fate is in Mrs. Crother's hands." Amy's face turned pale, and she looked to Rosa for help. But Rosa, knowing Daniel's decisions were final, ignored her and urged Daniel to leave quickly. Rosa didn't really want to speak for Amy, afraid Daniel might say something more in Lena's favor. After they left, Lena looked at Amy, who was sitting on the ground, full of despair. "You were used," Lena said with a sigh. This truth shattered Amy's spirit more than death could. "I was going to kill you," Lena continued calmly. "But we have no personal grudge. You were just a tool used against me. Killing you does me no good." Amy grasped the significance of her words. "If you forgive me, I'll do anything for you!" Lena watched Amy quietly. Amy solemnly pledged, "From now on, my life is yours." Lena smiled, satisfied. "Remember your words." Amy swore by her faith to remain loyal to Lena and never betray Lena. "Now, tell me, how can I leave the camp?" Lena asked. "Leave?" Amy looked puzzled. "Can't you just walk out?" Lena was speechless. Others might be able to, but she couldn't. Glancing at Kane watching them from a distance, she changed her question. "Can you defeat Kane?" Amy nodded and then shook her head, looking at her injured hand. "I used to be able to, but not now." Lena looked at the hand that had almost killed her but was broken by Daniel. Her feelings were complicated. "No problem. We can treat it. Even if it doesn't heal completely, you still have your left hand and two legs," Lena said with a smile. "If someone like me can learn combat from scratch, you'll learn much faster." Amy's eyes lit up with renewed determination, encouraged by Lena's words. "But defeating him will take too long." Lena sighed, looking at Kane. Amy followed her gaze and nodded in agreement. Seeing them looking at him, Kane puffed out his chest, showing off his impressive muscles, thinking they were admiring him. Lena and Amy sighed together, feeling disheartened about defeating Kane. Kane, seeing their disappointment, felt hurt. "Can you tell me about the camp's layout?" Lena asked, determined to find a way to escape. She couldn't stay here any longer. Over the next few days, Lena split her time between training and exploring the camp. With Amy as her sparring partner, Lena's skills improved rapidly. Unlike the previous instructor, Amy focused on teaching practical combat techniques. She discovered that Lena had a natural talent for fighting, often understanding the methods with minimal explanation. For instance, Amy taught Lena to use her elbow to deflect an attack and chop at her opponent's neck. Lena grasped the technique instantly before Amy explained much. If Lena had more strength, Amy's neck would have been broken. Lena also learned to target the second vertebra to incapacitate her opponent. Amy nearly suffocated from this attack. "You're a born killer." Amy marveled, rubbing her neck. "Keep training, and you could even assassinate the boss." Kane overheard this and broke into a cold sweat. That night, he reported the matter to Daniel, hoping Daniel would stop Lena's training. Daniel dismissed Kane's concerns. He didn't care about Lena's training, regarding it as a cat sharpening its claws. "I asked you to follow her to ensure her safety, not to spy on her. Don't report such things to me again." Seeing Kane's uneasy expression, Daniel asked, "What else?" Kane pointed to the window behind Daniel. Outside, a familiar figure was sneaking around. Taking advantage of Kane's absence, Lena tried to slip out, unaware she was right by Daniel's office. In the moonlit camp, Lena's shadow stretched long against the ground. She hugged the wall, making her steps as silent as possible, and her breathing barely audible. Daniel's office had one-way windows and was coated with light-absorbing material. Inside, Daniel and Kane watched Lena's cautious movements. Kane felt helpless. He wanted to intervene, but Daniel stopped him. Daniel grabbed his jacket and headed outside. He was curious to see who his wife was trying to meet in the middle of the night.
