Ethan Alvarez had spent years keeping his temper in check.
He had swallowed his anger, taken the high road, and played fair—even when Vanessa didn’t deserve it.
But after what she pulled at Lily’s school?
After the lies she was spreading, trying to take away the one thing he cared about most?
No more.
The cold, ruthless man he had buried was back.
And this time, he wasn’t holding back.
Kiana walked into the kitchen the next morning to find Ethan already awake, dressed in a crisp black suit, a look of pure steel in his eyes.
"You’re up early," she noted, pouring herself coffee.
"I have things to take care of," he said flatly.
Kiana paused. His tone was… different.
"Ethan?" she murmured. "Are you okay?"
He turned to her, his usual warmth gone, replaced with something colder. Sharper.
"I’ve been too soft on Vanessa," he said, his voice low and controlled. "That ends today."
Kiana set her mug down slowly. "What are you going to do?"
"Whatever it takes," he said.
And for the first time, Kiana saw the man Ethan had once been—the man who built his career with unshakable discipline, the man who protected what was his without hesitation.
He wasn’t just Lily’s father anymore.
He was her shield.
And nothing was going to break through.
Ethan didn’t call Vanessa.
He went straight to her penthouse.
The doorman barely had time to announce his arrival before Ethan pushed past him, stepping into Vanessa’s luxurious living room.
Vanessa was lounging on the couch, scrolling through her phone, looking every bit like the spoiled woman she was.
She glanced up, smirking. "Ethan. To what do I owe the pleasure?"
Ethan didn’t waste time.
"Drop the custody case."
Vanessa let out a dramatic sigh, setting her phone down. "Oh, come on. Don’t be so dramatic."
"I’m not asking," Ethan said, his voice like ice.
Vanessa arched a brow. "You can’t intimidate me, Ethan. I have every right to see my daughter."
Ethan stepped closer, towering over her. "You don’t get to call her ‘your’ daughter. A mother is someone who loves, protects, and raises her child. You abandoned her. You don’t get to claim her now just because you feel threatened."
Vanessa’s smirk wavered for a second before she scoffed. "Threatened? By that little waitress you’ve been playing house with?"
Ethan’s jaw clenched. "Don’t say her name."
Vanessa’s eyes darkened. "You actually care about her, don’t you?"
Ethan didn’t flinch. "She’s more of a mother to Lily than you’ll ever be."
Vanessa’s nostrils flared, but Ethan didn’t give her a chance to speak.
"Listen to me carefully, Vanessa," he said, his voice deadly calm. "If you keep pushing this, I will destroy you. You think you have power? I will make sure you lose everything—your reputation, your money, your connections. No judge will give you custody when I expose the kind of woman you really are."
Vanessa swallowed, her nails digging into the armrest. "You wouldn’t."
Ethan leaned in, his eyes cold. "Try me."
For the first time, Vanessa looked unsure.
And Ethan knew—he had won.
Later that evening, Kiana was in the kitchen when Ethan returned.
One look at his face, and she knew.
"You went to see her," she guessed.
Ethan loosened his tie, exhaling. "She’s backing down."
Kiana’s eyes widened. "Just like that?"
Ethan nodded. "She knows she won’t win. And if she tries, I’ll make sure she regrets it."
Kiana studied him carefully.
This wasn’t the easygoing, composed Ethan she was used to.
This was a man who would burn the world down to protect the people he loved.
And God help anyone who stood in his way.
"You scared her," Kiana murmured.
Ethan met her gaze, something unreadable in his eyes. "I meant every word I said to her, Kiana. I’m done playing fair."
Kiana swallowed, her heart pounding.
Not from fear.
But because she had never seen Ethan like this before—so raw, so unyielding.
And she had never wanted him more.
That night, Ethan checked on Lily as she slept.
Kiana lingered by the door, watching him.
"She’s safe now," Ethan said quietly, brushing a hand over Lily’s hair.
"Because of you," Kiana murmured.
Ethan shook his head. "Because of us."
He turned to her then, stepping closer.
"I don’t want you to leave," he admitted. "Not now. Not ever."
Kiana’s breath hitched.
Ethan reached up, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "Stay with us, Kiana."
Kiana swallowed hard.
She knew this was dangerous.
She knew getting closer to him, to Lily, meant risking everything.
But looking into his eyes, she knew—
She was already his.
"I’m not going anywhere," she whispered.
And when Ethan leaned in, pressing a slow, lingering kiss to her forehead, she knew—
Neither of them could fight this anymore.
