Robbie and Ronnie watched for the plane every morning and kept their ears tuned to the sound of a plane during the day. They cut firewood and hunted squirrels and rabbits around the house. Their rifles were always within arms-reach and they carried extra clips. The girls hunted, chopped wood, exercised, and kept the house cleaned alongside the guys to keep their bodies in shape and their minds in check, but in between they practiced shooting. The next day, heavy clouds turned into a light drizzle late in the afternoon. By dark, the drizzle turned into rain with occasional lightning. The next morning, Robbie and Ronnie were up early, having the best night’s sleep that they’d had in a while. The rain continued off and on, mostly on, throughout the day.
