Chapter 8: The Third Presence
Ethan didn’t sleep well after that night.
Not because Adrian had threatened him.
Not because anything explicit had happened.
But because nothing clear had happened at all.
And somehow, that was worse.
---
By morning, Ethan had decided something simple.
Distance.
He would keep distance.
Strict professionalism.
No emotional reaction.
No engagement outside work.
Just survive the internship.
That was the plan.
It lasted exactly three hours.
---
“Ethan Cole?”
He looked up from his desk.
A new voice.
Not Ms. Harper.
Not an intern.
A man stood at the edge of the marketing department holding a file folder and wearing a relaxed suit instead of the usual rigid corporate uniform.
Confident.
Easygoing.
Too comfortable for a place like this.
“Yes?” Ethan replied cautiously.
The man smiled slightly. “I’m Julian Park. Legal advisory team.”
He stepped closer and glanced at Ethan’s desk.
“So you’re the infamous new assistant assigned to the CEO.”
Ethan stiffened. “I’m not an assistant. I’m an intern.”
Julian raised a brow. “That’s not what the upper floor is calling it.”
Ethan didn’t like that sentence.
At all.
---
Julian leaned casually against the desk.
“I’ve seen a lot of interns come through here,” he said. “Most don’t get pulled into executive work within a week.”
Ethan frowned. “It wasn’t my choice.”
“Nothing here usually is,” Julian replied lightly.
That made Ethan pause.
There was something about Julian’s tone.
Observant.
But not intrusive.
Like he was watching a pattern only he understood.
---
Before Ethan could respond, Ms. Harper appeared behind them.
“Mr. Park,” she said sharply. “You’re not supposed to be here.”
Julian turned with a harmless smile. “Relax. I was just introducing myself.”
Ms. Harper’s expression didn’t soften. “Leave.”
Julian sighed dramatically. “Harsh.”
But he straightened anyway.
Before leaving, he looked back at Ethan.
“Be careful,” he said lightly.
Ethan frowned. “Of what?”
Julian’s smile faded slightly.
“Of being noticed twice,” he replied.
Then he left.
---
Ethan stood frozen for a moment.
“Do you know him?” Ms. Harper asked.
“No,” Ethan said quickly.
But something about Julian’s words lingered.
Being noticed twice.
It sounded too specific.
Too intentional.
---
That afternoon, Ethan was summoned again.
This time not by Ms. Harper.
Not by HR.
But directly from the executive floor.
Again.
He didn’t even ask anymore why.
He just went.
---
Adrian’s office felt colder than usual.
Or maybe Ethan was just more aware of it now.
Adrian stood by his desk, speaking with a man Ethan didn’t recognize.
Tall.
Sharp suit.
Calm posture.
Observant eyes.
When Adrian noticed Ethan, the conversation paused.
“Ethan,” Adrian said simply.
The unfamiliar man turned.
Their eyes met.
Ethan felt it instantly.
Pressure.
Not hostility.
Not warmth.
Assessment.
Like he was being evaluated.
---
Adrian gestured slightly.
“Julian Park,” he said. “Legal counsel.”
Ethan blinked.
That name again.
Julian smiled faintly. “We’ve met.”
Adrian’s gaze shifted between them.
“You have,” he repeated.
Ethan frowned. “Earlier today.”
Julian nodded. “Briefly.”
A pause.
Adrian’s expression didn’t change.
But something in the air did.
Subtle.
Tight.
---
“Ethan will assist with contract review,” Adrian said finally.
Julian tilted his head slightly. “That’s a high-level task for an intern.”
“He handles it well,” Adrian replied.
Ethan looked between them. “Sir, I’ve never—”
“You will,” Adrian interrupted calmly.
No discussion.
No room for refusal.
Julian watched this exchange quietly.
Then smiled again.
But this time, it wasn’t fully relaxed.
“Interesting,” he murmured.
Ethan caught it. “What is?”
Julian looked at him directly.
“Nothing,” he said. “Just observing patterns.”
Adrian’s voice cut in immediately.
“Leave.”
Julian raised his hands slightly in surrender. “Alright, alright.”
He turned toward the door.
But before leaving, he glanced back once more.
At Ethan.
Not Adrian.
Ethan.
“Try not to get caught in something you don’t understand,” he said lightly.
Then he left.
---
Silence returned.
Ethan shifted slightly. “Who is he to you?”
Adrian looked at him.
A long pause.
“Someone who understands consequences,” he said finally.
That wasn’t an answer.
But it was all Adrian offered.
---
Ethan exhaled slowly.
“Sir,” he said carefully, “I think I need to understand what is actually going on here.”
Adrian’s gaze didn’t leave him.
For a moment, something unreadable passed through his eyes.
Then he spoke.
“You already do.”
Ethan froze.
And for the first time—
he wasn’t sure if that was true.
Or terrifyingly accurate.
