Jim Tanner’s blue-and-gold cruiser was parked in my drive. He leaned against the vehicle, smoking upon my arrival at Willow Street. A string of blue-gray smoke lifted above his head, vanishing into the atmosphere. I parked my Avalanche alongside his cruiser, turned the beast off, and got out. I circled the front of the two vehicles, walked up to Jim, and said, “How you do, Mr. Officer of the Law?”
