Adam had been left despondent by her apparent disappearance; initially galvanised by Jan’s insistence that he get to the root of her change of heart, his inability to even make contact with her had rendered him forlorn and somewhat devoid of hope. His mind kept pulling him back to their last conversation in the park opposite the Town Hall; where, through a combination of desperation and anguish, he had told her everything. Every truth and every lie. And she had responded with three words. Three words he had never expected to hear.
