THE PHOTOGRAPH

362 Words
I sat in the driver’s seat far longer than I should have, the engine off, my hands resting on the steering wheel. Outside, rain slid down the windshield in silver streaks, blurring the city lights into something hazy and dreamlike. The photograph lay face-up on the passenger seat. Ryan’s face wasn’t in it, but the man standing beside the unmarked van… I knew that jawline, that stance, even if I couldn’t quite name him. The black-wrapped bundle he held was what made my stomach knot. My first instinct was to shove it into the glove compartment and forget I’d ever seen it. Pretend Nathaniel hadn’t pressed it into my hand, his voice low and urgent: “You need to see this before it’s too late.” But I couldn’t unsee it. I started the car, my mind a tangled mess of questions I couldn’t answer. I drove without thinking, circling blocks I didn’t need to, my eyes flicking to the rearview mirror every few seconds. That’s when I noticed it—a dark sedan following at a steady distance. Coincidence? Maybe. But my gut told me otherwise. By the time I reached home, the rain had slowed to a mist. Ryan’s car wasn’t in the driveway—Tuesday nights, he was always “working late.” The empty house felt colder than usual. In the kitchen, I poured myself a glass of wine, my hand trembling slightly. I set the photograph on the counter under the light. The longer I stared, the heavier the silence around me grew. Then my phone buzzed. An unknown number. You shouldn’t have that. My breath caught. Before I could even think, another message arrived. We can make this disappear. Meet me tomorrow. Alone. No name. No details. Just a single map pin. I tapped it, and the location filled the screen—an abandoned warehouse on the edge of town. I set the phone down, my pulse pounding in my ears. Nathaniel’s words replayed in my head: Men like Ryan don’t play fair. Maybe this wasn’t just about Ryan. Maybe I had stumbled into something far bigger. And I wasn’t sure I had a way out.
