Noami P.O.V.
The Saturday rink buzz felt off, a static charge in the air. I was mid-crossover, "Sparkle Motion" wheels humming, when I noticed them – Maya, Chloe, Liam, Emily, and Alex – huddled near the snack bar, their heads bent in a tight circle. A pang of unease hit me. Usually, I was in those huddles, part of the strategy, the jokes, the shared whispers.
As I skated closer, they straightened, a little too quickly, their smiles a touch too bright. "Hey!" I said, trying to keep my tone light.
"Hey, Naomi!" Maya chirped, but her eyes flickered away.
"We were just… talking," Chloe added, a nervous giggle escaping.
"About what?" I asked, a knot tightening in my stomach.
Liam shuffled his feet, "Thunder Toes" scuffing against the floor. "About the upcoming race."
"Oh," I said, but the word hung in the air, heavy with unspoken tension.
The rest of the afternoon was a strange dance. They included me, asked my opinion, laughed at my jokes, but there was a distance, a subtle shift in their energy. I saw them glancing at a new guy, a lean, brown-haired skater with a cocky grin, showing off some impressive tricks. He was laughing with them, fitting in too easily.
As the sun began to set, we gathered by the "Green Machine." Maya cleared her throat, "Naomi, we need to talk."
My heart pounded. "Okay."
"We've been thinking," Chloe began, her voice unusually serious. "About the team."
"Yeah," Liam added, his gaze fixed on his "Thunder Toes." "We're going to make some changes."
"Changes?" I echoed, my voice barely a whisper.
"We're adding someone new," Alex said, gesturing towards the brown-haired skater, who was leaning against the rink wall, a smug grin on his face. "This is Jake. He's new in town, and he's seriously good."
"Good?" I repeated, my mind reeling.
"He's got skills we need," Maya said, her voice firm. "He's fast, he's aggressive, he's a real competitor."
"And what am I?" I asked, my voice trembling.
"You're… you're great, Naomi," Emily said softly. "But we need to win this race."
"So, I'm not good enough?" I asked, tears stinging my eyes.
"It's not like that," Liam said, but his voice lacked conviction.
"Yes, it is," I said, my voice rising. "You're replacing me."
"We're not replacing you," Maya insisted. "We're just… expanding the team."
"With someone who's better," I said, the words bitter on my tongue.
"He's different," Chloe said, her voice barely audible.
"So, that's it?" I asked, my voice cracking. "After all these years, I'm just… out?"
They didn't answer. The silence was deafening. I turned and walked away, my "Sparkle Motion" skates feeling heavy, my heart heavier. As I walked, I heard the "Green Machine" door slam, and the engine start. I didn't turn around. I didn't want to see them drive away, leaving me behind.
