Chapter 3 Handover Manifest Chaos

926 Words
I slipped into the navigation room during the early morning shift change. The moment I finished packing away my papers, the door was suddenly shoved open. "Jace, I told you she was suspicious! She really touched the handover manifest!" I tightened my grip on the documents in panic. "I only came to take back my own papers. I never touched any handover manifest." Jace strode toward me, his gaze cold and heavy. "What do you need your papers for? Where is the manifest? Where did you hide it?" "I did not take it. It was not me!" But he did not believe a single word. He dragged me straight to the middle of the deck. Soon, a crowd gathered around us. "Search her." Several crew members stepped forward and searched through my coat, pockets, shoes, and socks. The surrounding whispers grew louder and louder. "Has she lost her mind? How dare she touch something like the handover manifest?" "People like her should be locked inside the surveillance cabin and never let out again." I stood frozen in place. My fingertips had gone pale, and I could not even lift my head. "Captain, the manifest is not on her." Jace's expression remained indifferent. "Search her room. If you still cannot find it, make her reorganize every single document sent to the bridge today. She does not get up until she finishes." My face instantly turned white. I grabbed his pant leg desperately. "Jace, I really did not do it. I am pregnant. If I finish all of that work, something bad will happen." He paused slightly, hesitation flashing briefly through his eyes. Luna immediately interrupted. "Jace, she is only trying to avoid responsibility. She will say anything." Jace pried my fingers away one by one. "Take her over there." I was dragged to the far end of the deck, my knees slamming hard against the freezing steel floor. Stacks of scattered documents were thrown in front of me. The moment I reached out to pick them up, a sharp pain twisted violently through my lower abdomen. The next second, cold sweat instantly soaked through my back. Warm liquid began running down my legs. I lowered my head and saw the horrifying pool of blood spreading across the floor. Then everything went black. When I woke up again, I was already in the infirmary. The air smelled strongly of disinfectant. My lower abdomen felt painfully empty, as though something had been ripped out of me by force. The moment I opened my eyes, I saw Jace sitting beside the bed. His eyes were bloodshot, as though he had not slept all night. "You are finally awake." I looked at him quietly. "What about the baby?" Jace fell silent for a moment. "We can have another one in the future." I closed my eyes. Just then, the door was pushed open. "Bianca, you are finally awake. They found the handover manifest. It was in my bag. I am sorry. I really did not do it on purpose. But the conditions on the ship are too poor. The doctor said it may be very difficult for you to have children again in the future. Maybe that is for the best. At least you will not have to suffer through childbirth anymore." I said nothing. But Luna's eyes suddenly reddened as though she had suffered some terrible injustice. "Luna already apologized. What more do you want? The damage is done. Just take responsibility for the manifest and let this end here. Don't put her through this again." Jace could not possibly fail to understand what it would mean if the blame landed on me. But he still said those words anyway. "I understand," I replied softly. "You should leave now. I want to rest." The room fell silent for several seconds. Jace slowly stood up. "Bianca, I already put your papers away. Stop thinking about leaving." "Jace, go back first," Luna said gently. "I will stay here with Bianca for a while." The moment the door closed, all the grievance on Luna's face disappeared instantly. "The only reason we kept you on this ship was so you could give birth in my place. Now you are useless." She walked to the bedside and slowly bent down. "When you left home back then, you only told your parents you were going away for work, right? After that, you never contacted them again." I looked at her sharply. She placed a photograph in front of me. It was my parents. And they were nearby. In just five years, they looked as though they had aged decades. "Last week, I contacted them for you. They are already on their way here." My breathing stopped. My fingers tightened violently around the bedsheets. "But this area gets very dangerous at night. Who knows if something might happen to them?" After speaking, she pulled out a temporary access card from her bag and placed it beside my hand. "There will be a nighttime supply ship arriving in half an hour. You can sneak aboard if you want. Whether you leave or not is your choice." I stared at the card as I slowly pushed myself upright against the bed. Whether she was telling the truth or not, I had to go. I grabbed the access card and pushed open the door. But the moment I reached the end of the hallway, I ran straight into Jace Langford from outside. His eyes instantly fell on the card in my hand. His expression darkened immediately. "Where are you going?"
