Chapter 8: The Pull Between Us

1199 Words
Elara POV The forest didn’t feel the same anymore. It wasn’t the silence—there had always been silence between the trees, heavy and watchful. It wasn’t even the lingering scent of blood, metallic and sharp in the cold air. It was… this. This invisible thread tightening around her chest. Elara slowed her steps, her breath uneven despite the fight being over. The others had moved ahead, their voices low, cautious, but distant—like she had been pulled out of the world and placed somewhere just slightly off-center. Her fingers curled unconsciously. The mark on her skin burned. Not painfully. Not violently. But aware. As if it was no longer just something that existed… But something that watched. Her gaze lifted. Kael stood several steps ahead, speaking to one of his warriors. His posture was as controlled as ever—shoulders squared, presence unshaken, voice low and steady. Nothing about him suggested weakness. Nothing about him suggested he felt what she felt. And yet— The moment her eyes settled on him, something inside her shifted. A pull. Sharp. Immediate. Unavoidable. Her breath caught. No. She forced her gaze away. This wasn’t real. It couldn’t be. A bond didn’t just… grow. It didn’t change. It didn’t tighten. But this one did. And that terrified her more than anything they had just faced. “Stay close.” His voice cut through her thoughts. Elara stiffened. She hadn’t heard him move. She turned—and he was there. Too close. Far too close. Kael’s eyes were on her, dark and searching in a way they hadn’t been before. Not just assessing. Studying. “You’re slowing down,” he said quietly. “I’m fine.” The answer came too quickly. Too sharp. His gaze flickered—just for a second—but he didn’t argue. Didn’t push. Which somehow made it worse. Elara exhaled slowly, forcing her heartbeat to steady. “Whatever that thing was,” she said, shifting the focus, “it wasn’t just a rogue.” Kael’s expression hardened slightly. “I know.” A pause. Then— “And it wasn’t alone.” The words settled between them like a warning. Elara felt it again. That pull. Stronger this time. Her fingers twitched. And before she could stop herself— She stepped closer. Kael POV He had felt it before she moved. That shift. That subtle, almost imperceptible change in the air between them. The bond. It reacted before she did. That alone was enough to put him on edge. Kael’s jaw tightened as Elara stepped closer, her presence brushing against something deeper than instinct. This wasn’t normal. It wasn’t how a bond worked. It wasn’t how any of this was supposed to work. And yet— Every time she got too close, something in him responded. Not as an Alpha. Not as a leader. But as something far more primal. Dangerous. He exhaled slowly, forcing control back into his body. “You felt it,” he said, his voice lower now. Not a question. A statement. Elara didn’t answer immediately. Didn’t deny it either. And that was enough. Kael’s gaze dropped—just briefly—to the mark on her skin. It wasn’t fading. If anything— It looked darker. Stronger. As if it had settled in. A muscle in his jaw ticked. “This isn’t stabilizing,” he said. “It’s changing.” Her eyes lifted to his. And for a moment— There was no resistance in them. No defiance. Just… awareness. The same thing he felt. The same thing he refused to name. Kael stepped back. Not far. Just enough to breathe. “We end this before it gets worse,” he said. Controlled. Final. The Alpha again. But the words didn’t sit right. Not even to him. Because deep down— He knew something had already shifted. Something they couldn’t undo. A branch snapped in the distance. Both of them froze. The warriors ahead went silent instantly, instincts snapping into place. Kael’s head turned slightly, his senses stretching outward. Nothing. And that was the problem. There should have been something. Movement. Sound. Anything. But the forest had gone completely still. Too still. Elara stepped closer again—this time without hesitation. The bond flared. Sharp. Immediate. Kael felt it hit him like a pulse through his chest. His hand moved before he could stop it—closing around her wrist. Warm. Alive. Connected. For a second— Neither of them moved. Didn’t breathe. Didn’t speak. The world narrowed to that single point of contact. And then— A whisper cut through the silence. Low. Mocking. Too close. “Found you.” Elara POV Her breath hitched. The voice— It wasn’t behind them. It wasn’t ahead. It was… Everywhere. Her pulse spiked as her eyes darted through the trees, searching for movement—anything that could explain the sudden, suffocating presence closing in around them. But there was nothing. Only shadows. Only silence. Only that voice lingering in the air like a threat that hadn’t fully formed yet. Kael’s grip on her wrist tightened. Not enough to hurt. Enough to ground. Enough to warn. “Elara,” he said quietly. But she already knew. Something was wrong. Not just outside. But inside. The mark burned. This time— It wasn’t subtle. It wasn’t controlled. It surged. Her breath caught as heat spread through her veins, sharp and unfamiliar, like something buried deep inside her had just… awakened. Her knees almost buckled. Kael’s hold was the only thing keeping her steady. “What is this—” she started, her voice breaking. But the words never finished. Because the forest shifted. Not physically. Not visibly. But undeniably. And for the first time— Elara felt it. Not fear. Not instinct. Not the bond. Something else. Something far older. Far darker. Watching her. Waiting. Her voice came out as barely a whisper. “Kael…” Kael POV He had felt it too. The shift. The wrongness. But what hit him next— That wasn’t the forest. That wasn’t the enemy. That was her. The bond didn’t just react. It surged. Violent. Uncontrolled. His grip tightened instantly as Elara faltered, his instincts snapping into place without hesitation. “Stay with me,” he said, his voice sharper now. Commanding. Grounding. But his focus had already shifted. Not outward. Inward. On her. On what was happening to her. Because this— This wasn’t a normal reaction. This wasn’t a bond stabilizing. This was something else entirely. Something that shouldn’t exist. And then— He felt it. Not through the forest. Not through the air. Through the bond. A second presence. Cold. Watching. Connected— Not to him. To her. Kael’s eyes snapped toward the trees. But this time— He wasn’t searching for a rogue. He was searching for something far worse. Something that didn’t belong. And for the first time since the bond had formed— Kael didn’t try to break it. Didn’t try to ignore it. Didn’t try to control it. Because whatever was coming for her… He felt it too. “You felt that too,” she whispered. Kael didn’t answer. Because he had.
