Chapter 6: The One They Were Waiting For

763 Words
The forest didn’t move. It obeyed. Elara felt it the moment the creature stepped forward from the darkness. The other wolves—if they could even be called that—had been chaotic, broken, unpredictable. This one wasn’t. It moved with purpose. With control. Its body was larger than the rest, but that wasn’t what made her chest tighten. It wasn’t the unnatural way its limbs carried it, or the dark, shifting patterns beneath its skin. It was the stillness. The awareness. It was looking at her. Only her. The bond reacted instantly. A sharp pulse tore through her chest, stronger than before, almost painful. Her breath caught as something deep inside her responded—not fear, not exactly—but recognition. “That’s not like the others,” she said quietly. Kael didn’t take his eyes off it. “No.” The creature took another step forward. The rest remained frozen behind it. Waiting. Elara’s grip tightened on her weapon, but something in her instincts shifted. Fighting the others had been straightforward—dangerous, but clear. This wasn’t. “Why is it just watching?” she asked. Kael’s voice dropped, lower now, edged with something sharper. “Because it’s not hunting.” A pause. “It’s choosing.” The word settled heavily in her chest. The creature’s head tilted slightly, as if studying her, understanding something she didn’t. Its black eyes didn’t just look empty—they looked deep, like something was staring through her instead of at her. The bond pulsed again. Harder. Elara took a step back before she realized it. The creature moved instantly. Not attacking. Closing distance. Kael shifted in front of her without hesitation this time, his stance tightening, every muscle ready. “Stay behind me.” She didn’t argue. Not this time. The creature stopped a few feet away. Close enough that she could see it clearly now. The way its chest rose slowly. The faint, unnatural movement beneath its skin. The way its gaze never left her. Then it spoke. Not in words. But in something worse. A low, distorted sound pressed into her mind, sharp and invasive. Elara flinched, her hand instinctively rising to her head as the sensation spread, like something was forcing its way into her thoughts. Images flickered. Fire. Darkness. A forest burning. And then— Herself. Elara staggered back, her breath catching as the vision snapped away. “What—” she gasped. Kael turned sharply toward her. “What did it do?” “I—” She shook her head, trying to clear the lingering echo in her mind. “It’s not just attacking… it’s—” “Connected,” he finished. Her eyes snapped to his. “You felt that too?” “No,” he said, his voice tighter now. “But I can see it.” The creature took another step. Closer. The bond surged violently. This time it didn’t feel like connection. It felt like pressure. Like something pulling her forward. Elara’s breath hitched. Her body tensed. And before she could stop herself— She stepped toward it. Kael’s hand closed around her wrist instantly, stopping her. “Don’t.” The contact sent a shock through her system, the bond flaring between them, sharp and immediate. For a second, everything else blurred—the forest, the danger, the creature. There was only that connection. Too close. Too strong. Elara pulled her hand free. “I didn’t mean to,” she said, her voice lower now. “It’s pulling me.” Kael’s gaze darkened. “I know.” The creature stilled again, watching the interaction with unsettling focus. “It’s not trying to kill you,” Kael said slowly. That realization settled like ice. Elara’s throat tightened. “Then what does it want?” The creature moved again. One step closer. The others behind it shifted slightly, responding to its movement like extensions of its will. Kael stepped forward this time, placing himself firmly between her and it. “Whatever it is,” he said quietly, “it’s not getting it.” The creature’s head tilted again. Then— It smiled. Not like a wolf. Like something wearing one. A sharp, piercing sound tore through the air, and the moment shattered. The wolves surged forward again. But this time— They weren’t attacking blindly. They were driving her back. Separating her. Elara’s eyes widened. “They’re—” “Trying to take you,” Kael said, his voice turning cold. The bond flared violently. And this time— It wasn’t just reacting. It was resisting.
