Elara POV
The pull didn’t fade. It stayed inside her, quiet and steady, but wrong in a way she couldn’t ignore. Elara walked beside Kael, her steps slow without her realizing it. The forest around them should have felt familiar, safe even, but something about it had shifted. It didn’t feel like their territory anymore. It felt like something else had entered it. Her fingers curled slightly at her sides. The mark on her skin was warm, not burning, but alive in a way that made her uneasy. It wasn’t reacting randomly anymore. It felt aware. “It’s still there,” she said. Her voice was low, but certain.
Kael POV
Kael didn’t like the way she said that. Not unsure. Not confused. Certain. “What is?” he asked, his tone controlled but sharp enough to show he was fully alert. He didn’t miss anything—the way her steps had slowed, the way her focus had turned inward. That was never a good sign. Not when something unknown was already involved. She exhaled slowly, trying to explain something she barely understood herself. “It’s not just me,” she said. “It’s not just the bond between us.” Her brows drew together slightly as she searched for the right words. “It feels like something is connected to it… like it’s touching it from the outside.” Saying it out loud made it real. Too real. Kael stopped walking immediately. The entire group stopped with him. No hesitation.Explain,” he said. Short. Direct. He didn’t need long answers. He needed clear ones. Elara She shook her head slightly. “I don’t fully understand it,” she admitted. “But when it pulled just now… it didn’t feel like the bond reacting.” She paused for a second, trying to describe it properly. “It felt like something else was pulling it.” The words settled heavily between them. Even the forest seemed quieter after that. Kael That was enough for him. Kael turned toward the elder, his focus shifting without losing awareness of his surroundings. “You said interference,” he said. “This is it.” His voice didn’t rise. It didn’t need to. The elder stepped forward slowly, his expression more serious than before. “Yes,” he said quietly. “It may be.” Kael didn’t accept uncertainty. “Say it clearly.”
Elara POV
She watched the elder carefully. For the first time, there was hesitation in his eyes. That alone made her uneasy. “If something attached itself to the bond at the moment it formed,” the elder said, “then it may not belong to only the two of you anymore.” Elara felt something cold settle in her chest. Not belong to only them? Then what was it?
Kael POV
Kael’s jaw tightened slightly. “It never did,” he said. The answer came without hesitation. Because in his mind, nothing about this had been normal from the start. But this— This made it worse.
Elara POV
Her breathing slowed, not because she was calm, but because she was trying to understand. “If something is attached to it…” she said slowly, “then it can feel us.” The thought made her uneasy. Not just uneasy. Exposed. Her hand moved to the mark again. It felt warmer now, more active. “Then it knows where we are,” she said.
Kael POV
That was enough. Kael didn’t wait. “We return to the pack,” he said. “Now.” His tone left no room for argument. This wasn’t something to deal with out here. Not without control. The warriors adjusted formation instantly, moving closer, tighter, more defensive.
Elara POV
They started moving again. But this time, the forest didn’t feel empty. It felt full. Like something unseen was moving with them, keeping pace just beyond sight. Her steps slowed again. The pull shifted. Subtle.
But clear. Her breath caught. No. That wasn’t right. She focused again. And this time, she understood. “It’s not following us,” she said.
Kael POV
He stopped instantly. “What do you mean?” His voice was sharper now, fully focused.
Elara POV
Her eyes lifted slowly. Not searching. Not uncertain. Fixed. “It’s not behind us,” she said. Her voice didn’t shake. That made it worse. “It’s ahead.” She paused for a second. “It’s waiting.” Kael That changed everything. Kael’s focus sharpened instantly. “Ahead where?” he asked. He didn’t like threats he couldn’t see.
Elara POV
She didn’t hesitate. Her gaze stayed fixed on the path ahead. “Where we’re going.” The words came quietly, but they carried weight. Because she knew they were true.
Kael POV
Kael didn’t waste time. “Move faster,” he ordered. The warriors picked up pace immediately. But Kael didn’t relax. Because now he understood something important— They weren’t being chased. They were being led.The pull grew stronger with every step. Not painful. Not sharp. But impossible to ignore. It felt like something was guiding her. Calling her. She didn’t like that. Her fingers tightened again. “Kael…” He heard the change in her voice. “What is it?”
Elara POV
She didn’t answer immediately. Her eyes were fixed ahead. The pull spiked. Sudden. Strong. She stopped. This time without warning. “It’s close,” she said. Her voice dropped lower. More certain. “Closer than before.”
Kael POV
Kael raised his hand slightly. The group stopped instantly. Silence settled again. But this time, it wasn’t empty. It was filled with something unseen. Something present. “Positions,” he said. The warriors spread out at once, forming a defensive arc. Kael stepped forward just enough to take control of the space. “Show yourself,” he said.
Elara POV
The bond reacted first. A steady pull that suddenly tightened. Her breath slowed. Her eyes lifted. “It’s here,” she said.
And this time, she didn’t have to point.
Kael POV
He saw it. Not clearly at first. Just a shift in the air. Then— It stepped forward. The same figure. But not the same presence. This time, it felt stronger. Closer. More real. Her chest tightened. The mark burned again. Not sharp. But deep. “It’s changed,” she said. Kael Kael’s focus sharpened. “What are you?” he asked. His voice carried more now—more challenge, more control.
Elara POV
The figure didn’t smile this time. It looked at her. Only her. “You’re starting to feel it,” it said. Her breath caught. “Feel what?” The answer came without hesitation. “What you are.”
Kael POV
Kael stepped forward immediately. Enough. He wasn’t letting this continue. “You don’t define her,” he said. His voice was controlled, but harder now.
Elara POV
Her heart was racing. Not from fear. From something else. Something building. “You keep saying things without explaining anything,” she said. “If you know something, say it.” The figure held her gaze. For a moment, it said nothing. Then— “It’s not about what I know,” it said. A pause. “It’s about what you’re about to remember.”
Kael POV
That was enough. Kael moved. Fast. Decisive. “This ends now,” he said.
Elara POV
The pull snapped. Stronger than before. Her breath broke as the mark flared again. Heat rushed through her chest. Her vision blurred. Then— A flash. Clearer. Stronger. A place. A voice. A presence. Her body went still. “Kael…” she whispered. Kael He heard it. That tone again. “What is it?” he asked.
Elara POV
She didn’t look at him. Her eyes stayed forward. But they weren’t seeing the forest anymore. They were seeing something else. Something real. “I’ve seen this before.”
