Chapter 10: What Cannot Be Broken

972 Words
Elara POV The smile didn’t leave his face. It stayed there, calm and certain, like he already knew something she didn’t. Elara felt a strange stillness inside her. The burning that had been rising again suddenly settled, as if it was waiting… listening. That scared her more than the pain. “Answer me,” she said, her voice steady but low. “Who are you?” The figure didn’t reply at once. It just looked at her, like she was something familiar, something it had been searching for. “You already know,” it said. Elara frowned. “I don’t.” A soft, quiet laugh. “You do.” Her chest tightened. Nothing about this felt right. Kael POV Kael had heard enough. He stepped forward, placing himself fully in front of her this time. His presence changed instantly. Stronger. Sharper. The kind that made even his warriors straighten without thinking. “Step away,” he said. His tone wasn’t loud. But it carried weight. The figure’s eyes finally shifted to him. For a moment, it went still, like it was measuring him. Then it smiled again. “You can’t stop this, Alpha.” Kael didn’t react outwardly, but his focus sharpened. He didn’t like the way it spoke. Too calm. Too sure. “Try me,” he said. Short. Direct. No extra words. Behind him, he could feel his pack ready. Waiting for his signal. That was all it would take. One command. But something didn’t add up. The figure wasn’t afraid. It wasn’t even tense. It was… patient. Elara POV Something about the way Kael stood in front of her made her chest tighten. Not fear. Something else. But she pushed it aside. “This isn’t about territory, is it?” she said, her eyes still on the figure. The smile deepened just slightly. “No.” That single word felt heavier than it should have. Elara took a slow breath. The mark burned again, but this time it didn’t feel wild. It felt… connected. Like it was reacting to the figure. Or worse— Recognizing it. “What do you want?” she asked. The figure didn’t answer her question. It asked one instead. “Do you really think this bond was a mistake?” Her heart skipped. She didn’t reply. Because she didn’t know. Kael POV That was enough. Kael’s patience snapped—not in anger, but in decision. He didn’t like games. He didn’t like half answers. And he definitely didn’t like anything that came near his pack— Or her. “What do you want?” he repeated. This time, his voice carried a warning. Clear. Final. The figure looked between them. Then said quietly, “This was never meant to happen.” Kael’s eyes narrowed. “What wasn’t?” The figure didn’t hesitate. “The bond.” Kael felt that word hit harder than it should have. For a second, he said nothing. Because his instinct was simple— Break it. End it. Fix it. But something inside him didn’t move the way it should. And that bothered him more than anything. Elara POV Her breath felt uneven now. The bond. Again. Everything was coming back to that. “What do you mean?” she asked. The figure took one small step forward. The warriors reacted instantly, shifting, ready—but it stopped before anyone could act. Like it knew exactly where the line was. “You’re not supposed to be here,” it said. Elara frowned. “This is my pack’s land.” “That’s not what I meant.” A chill ran through her. If not here… then where? Her thoughts broke as the burning under her skin flared again. This time, it hurt. Her hand gripped Kael’s arm tightly. “Something’s wrong—” Kael POV He felt it immediately. The shift wasn’t outside. It was her. Kael turned to her at once, his focus changing completely. Whatever this was, it was affecting her first. That was enough. “What did you do?” he asked, his voice dropping. The figure didn’t answer. It just watched. That made it worse. Kael stepped closer to Elara, his grip steady, firm enough to keep her grounded. “Look at me,” he said. She didn’t. Her breathing was uneven now, her body tense under his hold. And the bond— It wasn’t stable anymore. It was pushing. Changing. “This cannot be undone,” the figure said quietly. Kael’s expression hardened. “Then it will be.” He didn’t hesitate. Didn’t doubt it. Because in his mind, there was always a solution. There had to be. Elara POV Her vision blurred slightly. The pain spread faster now, sharp and deep. Her breath came uneven as she tried to stay steady. “Kael…” she whispered. Something was wrong. Not just the bond. Something deeper. Something she didn’t understand. The forest felt heavier again, like something unseen had moved closer. Watching. Waiting. Kael POV Enough. He turned sharply toward his warriors. “Move,” he ordered. The command was clear. Immediate. But before anyone could take a step— The figure moved. Not forward. Not back. It just… faded. Like it had never been fully there. Kael’s eyes narrowed. No sound. No scent. Nothing left behind. Silence filled the clearing. Heavy. Unsettling. Kael looked back at Elara instantly. “What did it do to you?” “I don’t know,” she said. And that— That was not an answer he liked. Not at all. An elder stepped forward slowly. Uneasy. Careful. “Alpha…” Kael didn’t look at him. “Say it.” A pause. Then— “This cannot be undone.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “Then undo it.” Silence followed. No one moved. No one answered. Because they couldn’t. 🔥
