Madeline stood in the distance, gazing out at the desert. As she raised her head, millions of bright stars illuminated the sky. Curious to what she thought when she saw them. Was she on the lookout for something? And if so, what was she looking for, other than the girl of my dreams? As I approached, her head turned slightly. I wasn’t sure if it was my thoughts or the sound of my feet crushing the dirt as I approached her that made her look in my direction. Far to our left, the soldiers were marching the prisoners toward a dry riverbed and making them kneel. It was only my hope that Madeline hadn’t seen that view. As I neared, I looked up into the sky. There was a lovely breeze blowing through the eerie night, a warm wind, but it was pleasant enough to make the darkness less intimidating.
