A day passed, and there still was no sign of the girl Madeline, and Jack was worried. He had come into town, hoping he would find her. “Why are we keeping him alive?” Fernando argued into the cellphone. “Let me kill him,” he told his boss impatiently. “No, I’ve given direct orders — Jack isn’t to be harmed until we find the girl. She will return for him. I just know it. We must let her come looking for him. Until then, we leave Jack alone. Just keep an eye on him. She, no doubt, will turn up again.
