THUMPER AWOKE BEFORE dawn. Janey stood by the window, gazing toward the driveway. He slipped out of bed and went to her. He saw the desire in her eyes. He could feel the waves of anticipation flowing from her body.
He steeled himself, then asked the question. “You have to follow them, don’t you?”
“It’s the chance of a lifetime. This is my chase, the story is my fox. I have to go wherever it leads, do whatever it takes.” She looked at him with an elfin grin. “A badge of glory awaits at the end.”
He turned his face away from hers. They stood together in silence for a long moment. “I guess you’d better get your stuff. If you leave now, you can just make it to Brookside in time for the hunt.”
