“THOU SHALT NOT kill.”
Reverend Dan cast a steely eye over the Sunday morning congregants. Attendance had swelled as word of the vicar’s newfound vigor spread. Nominal members of the church who rarely set foot inside St. Cuthbert’s except for Christmas and Easter services now sat in rapt attention to hear his preaching.
“Thou shalt not kill!” Dan repeated with more emphasis. Everyone’s head lifted up and all eyes turned to him. “Or…?” A pensive thought creased his brow. “Does it say ‘Thou shalt not murder?’ The Hebrew word could be interpreted either way. So which is it? Does the Sixth Commandment forbid killing in any form? Or does it only forbid murder? And, if so, what then is the distinction? What about killing in war?
