IT TOOK JANEY a few minutes to piece together the events of the previous night and realize where she was. She found herself in an unfamiliar bedroom. It was a corner room with windows on the north and east sides. Lying on her back, she could see a pattern of long, jagged cracks in the old plaster ceiling that brought to mind a map of the Amazonian Basin. She was in a twin bed, her new dress laid neatly on the other one. She looked under the covers and saw that she had slept in her bra and panties. Had she done so all night? Or had they been off at some point, and put back on?
