Chapter 6: The Forgotten Guardian

230 Words
The group gathered at the quarry just as the sun dipped below the horizon. The portal shimmered faintly, casting an otherworldly glow across the jagged rocks. This time, they were prepared. Elena carried a backpack filled with supplies, Nathan had upgraded his smartwatch to interface with the System, and Julian’s sword appeared in his hand the moment they stepped closer. As they approached, the portal pulsed, and a voice boomed from its depths. “The System endures. Enter, or face annihilation.” “Friendly as ever,” Elena muttered, before stepping through with the others close behind. The group exchanged tense glances, bracing for the inevitable clash. Julian tightened his grip on his sword, heart pounding. Elena checked her gear, ready for whatever came next. Nathan’s fingers hovered over his smartwatch, analyzing the situation. The Guardian's fiery gaze locked onto them, waiting for their move. They emerged into a desolate wasteland, the air heavy with ash and the sky a swirling vortex of gray. Ahead of them stood a massive structure—a fortress built from black stone that seemed to absorb the light around it. Guarding its gates was a figure unlike any they had faced before: a towering humanoid creature with molten skin and eyes like burning coals. “I am the Guardian,” it rumbled, raising a massive halberd. “Prove your worth, or be destroyed.”
