CHAPTER FIVE

"Good morning," greeted Amber, Landry's aunt, as she stepped into Landry's room without so much as a gentle knock. The sudden entrance broke the stillness of the morning, and Landry, who had been lost in thought while staring out of the window, let out a resigned sigh. “Good morning, you good?” Landry asked, trying to mask the weariness in her voice. Amber pulled up a chair next to the bed, her eyebrows knitting together in concern. “I should rather be asking you if you are fine. How are you feeling today?” she inquired gently, shifting the conversation towards the lingering worries that had clouded their minds since the previous day. “I wanted to know if the drugs we took from the pharmacy are effective.” Landry nodded, a hint of relief washing over her features as she sat up straighter. “Yes, they are. I feel better compared to yesterday,” she admitted, allowing the warmth of the morning light to brighten her spirits just a little bit more. It felt good to hear that the medication was making a difference, easing the discomfort that had plagued her for days. “Good to hear! It’s about time we got some positive news around here,” Amber said, a smile breaking through her earlier worry. “Alright, what would you like for breakfast?” she asked, her voice now cheerful as she began to map out her plan for the morning. Preparing a special meal was one of the ways she enjoyed caring for her niece, especially during times when Landry needed a bit more support. Landry thought for a moment, her stomach rumbling softly at the prospect of food. “Rice Pudding would do,” she replied, a slight smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. It was a simple dish but one that brought back fond memories of her childhood, a potential comfort on a day filled with uncertainty. “I’ll get that made for you,” Amber said, rising from her seat. She paused, as if remembering something important. “By the way, I heard you’d be leaving for school tomorrow, right?” she asked, concern creeping back into her voice. The thought of Landry rejoining her peers after her time away sent mixed feelings through Amber; she wanted her to be independent and return to her normal routine, but she also worried about her readiness. “Yes,” Landry responded, her voice carrying a note of determination. Despite the looming transition, she felt a flutter of excitement at the idea of returning to school, seeing her friends, and stepping back into the rhythm of her daily life. It felt like a step toward normalcy that she had longed for, though deep down, she also knew that it might not be as simple as it seemed. Amber studied Landry’s face, searching for signs of apprehension or lingering doubt. “Just remember to take it easy, okay? You don’t have to jump back into everything all at once. We can ease into it,” she advised, her protective instinct coming to the forefront. “I will, Aunt Amber,” Landry assured her, appreciating the care behind the words. “I’ve missed everyone and just... want to get back to my life.” Amber nodded, feeling a mixture of pride and apprehension for her niece. It was a significant step, but she had confidence in Landry's strength and resilience. As Amber turned to head to the kitchen, Landry leaned back against her pillows, her mind drifting to thoughts of the upcoming school day. The last few weeks had been a whirlwind of doctors' visits, medications, and moments of uncertainty, but now, with a nourishing breakfast on the way and a sense of hope for the future, she felt a little more like herself again. A little while later, her phone rang, breaking the silence. It was her mom calling to see how she was doing, and the sound of her mom's voice filled her with happiness. After being away, just hearing from her brought a sense of comfort and warmth. They chatted for about ten minutes, sharing updates about their lives. During their conversation, her mom emphasized the importance of taking her lessons seriously. She reminded her daughter to stay focused on the goals that led her to this point in her life. It was a heartfelt moment that reinforced the bond between them, and her mom's supportive words echoed in her mind long after the call ended.Despite a restless night, Baron woke up early, compelled to check on Landry. Their heartfelt conversation revealed that she would be departing for school the next day. He felt a wave of sadness wash over him, but he held back his feelings, simply replying, "Okay." Recognizing the importance of her education, he encouraged her to dedicate herself to her studies, reminding her of the purpose behind her journey. As they spoke, Landry’s aunt, Amber, quietly entered the scene, balancing a bowl of warm rice pudding, toasted bread, and a fluffy omelet. "This is for you," she said with a smile. "Thanks!" Landry responded, her voice brightening the moment. "I’m also taking a leave," Amber added, revealing her support. Throughout this touching encounter, Baron remained silent, captivated by the melody of Landry's voice, cherishing their connection in this brief but significant moment. "So sorry I didn't tell you to hang on," Landry apologized, her voice laced with genuine remorse. She ran a hand through her hair, a gesture that betrayed her slightly flustered state. "I was talking to my aunt for a moment. She just brought me breakfast," she added, a hint of a smile breaking through her earlier anxiety. Landry glanced at the spread on the table next to her—a warm plate of scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, and a perfectly toasted bagel slathered with cream cheese. The aroma wafting from the food was enticing, and it was hard to concentrate when her stomach was rumbling in protest. “I didn’t mean to keep you waiting,” she continued, trying to shift the focus back to the conversation that had been momentarily interrupted. “I just hadn't seen her in a while, and I didn’t want to be rude. You know how family is.” There was a nostalgic lilt to her tone, as if memories of similar mornings spent with loved ones danced in her mind. “I really appreciate your patience. Sometimes life just throws a few unexpected things our way,” she said with a chuckle, hoping to lighten the mood as she settled back into the conversation. She could feel the tension easing, the familiar rhythm of their dialogue gently pulling her back into focus..
