The first test of discernment arrived disguised as opportunity. An invitation surfaced from a circle that had once dismissed Elena entirely. This time the tone was respectful. Curious. Almost deferential. They requested her presence not as a subject, but as a contributor. The framing was careful enough to suggest learning rather than extraction. Elena read it once, then again. Lucien watched without comment. “They have changed posture,” he said finally. “Yes.” “They are attempting to meet you where you are.” “No,” Elena replied. “They are attempting to be seen doing so.” Lucien nodded. “That difference matters.” Elena set the invitation aside, did not decline, did not accept. “The danger,” she said, “is not compromise. It is participation without clarity.” Lucien leaned back.
