Chapter IXThen, it became so very quiet. I was on my feet and standing in Ringwood's second floor hallway, just outside the bedroom where Adam hid under the bed. The only light I could detect was coming from the gas lamps in the hall. The Manor was no longer in the throes of collapsing: the weeping and wailing voices were gone. A few yards before me was the main staircase and I could see Adam a few steps down, just above the middle landing. He was looking into a mirror on the staircase wall. His look was one of exasperation and shock as he observed his image in the mirror. He had yet to notice me as I moved closer and soon I could see the reflection in the mirror WAS NOT ADAM.
