Chapter Eight- A Night To Rival Them All
*Averys POV*
After a hour of arguing with herself about what I was going to wear, Laya on long navy blue gown the hugged my figure perfectly, my auburn hair tightly curled and pinned up. I was forced into a chair as she plastered my face with all different kinds of make up, and I didn’t complain once no matter how much I wanted to. Laya linked her arm with mine at the top of the stairs and gave a reassuring squeeze. She had chosen to go with a simple burgundy dress, resting just above her knees with a lace neckline. She took the first step down the stairs, pulling me with her and as we got to the last step I let out a small gasp. In front of me stood the twins in immaculate black suits, navy bow ties and white shirts. There eyes were glued on to me as I took the final step down, giving a silly curtesy to which they bowed back.
“So is one of you going to tell me why I look like a princess now?” I asked hugging each of them in turn.
“Nope the surprise continues” Regan smirked dangling a piece of black blindfold in front of him.
“You have to be kidding me!” I pouted, crossing my arms against my chest.
“Please Avery” Harry whined, taking my hand and planting a soft kiss on to my knuckles. I gave a stiff nod and closed my eyes, I tried to relax but every joint in my body tensed as the fabric rested over my eyes. I was led out of the house, a stampede of footsteps following us out. The boys kept a firm grip on each arm, Regan using his index finger tracing shapes on the inside of my wrists to keep me calm. A car door slid open and I was placed on a seat, the boys grip loosened and my heart ached, I felt almost scared. It wasn’t until someone slid in next to me and held my hand that a I took a breath. The car started moving and I sat in silence, every part of my brain trying to figure out where they could be possibly taking me. The journey was short, when the car pulled to a halt I heard a door swing open and a rush of breeze startled me. Someone helped me out the car and rushed me up a gravel path, the familiar arm of Harry holding me up.
“Careful there is some steps” he directed, his grip on my tightening ever so slightly as he guided me up the marbled steps. In the distance I could hear people chatting and laughing, glasses clinking together.
“Okay just a few more steps” Harry muttered, his hand had began to drip with sweat. He slid his hand away from mine and slipped off the blindfold, my eyes took a minute to adjust to the light burning slightly. When the sensation had passed I was met with the dinning room decorated with balloons, streamers and fairy lights all in various shades of purples and pinks. A banner was strung across the back wall imprinted with ‘Happy birthday Avery!’ hand painted on. A tear rolle down my cheek as I took it all in. Regan strolled in taking his place at my side and placing a hand on my lower back.
“So what do you think?” Smirked Harry, wrapping a arm around my shoulders and pulling me into him for a hug.
“It’s perfect” I gasped, my cheeks glowing crimson even underneath all the makeup.
‘They’re serious about us’ howled Rain in the back of my head, running circles excitedly.
“May I have this dance” Regan asked, offering me his hand and leading me on to the dance floor.
“You should know I have no idea how to dance” I frowned, I wasn’t a fan of party’s but it wasn’t like I had the chance to ever attend one.
“Just follow my lead” smiled Regan, waltzing me effortlessly around the makeshift dance floor that was set up. With every spin and dip better then the next he whisked me around the dance floor as if I was air. When the song slowed down he pulled me close and we swayed on the spot my hand on his chest and my head resting on his shoulder as he gazed down at me smiling.
“I never had a chance to tell you how stunning you look tonight” he whispered, pressing a kiss to my forehead.
“I could say the same to you Alpha” I teased earning myself a small chuckle in reply.
“You really didn’t have to do this” I sighed, gesturing around the room.
“I know we didn’t but we wanted to. In all the years you lived here you not once celebrated your birthday let alone have a party. I guess this was our way of making it up to you, but if you don’t like it then the idea was entirely Harry’s and I had nothing to do with it” he chuckled and it was almost infectious and I couldn’t help but join. He was right, growing up my birthday was the same as every other day in my life, not some joyous occasion where you spent time with your family and loved ones. The last birthday I remember celebrating was my 8th birthday, a couple of weeks before my parents died. We went out on a day trip with Laya and her parents to a nearby lake. While the adults set up the blankets and picnic me and Laya were swimming int he water, laughing and splashing each other. We stayed there all day and our dads had to carry our lifeless body’s home after spending the hole day swimming and chasing each other around.
“Thank you” I gushed, a warm tear spilling down my cheek. Gazing over his shoulder I saw Harry walking over and pulled myself away from Regan.
“I think it’s my turn” he beamed, Regan kissed my cheek before walking away to chat to a group of people nearby.
“I was wondering where you had gotten to” I teased, wrapping my arms around his neck as he holds my waist.
“What can I say I’m a busy man” he laughed, spinning my away from him and then twirling me back before wrapping m his arm around me. I would be lying if I said that I had fully forgiven Harry, a part of me still hated him for what he put me through but like I said the past is the past.
“Thank you by the way” he mumbled, staring dreamily off into the distance.
“For what? Shouldn’t I be thanking you?”I giggled, a smile playing on his lips.
“For staying” he sighed, his soft lips pecking the top of my forehead.
“I know it probably wasn’t the most easy decision to make” he pulled me closer as if he was scared I was going to change my mind a flee.
“Your right it wasn’t easy” I muttered, my head and heart had been in constant battle for the last week leading up to tomorrow, constantly torn between wanting to stay and make this work but the possibility of me being left heartbroken was high.
“I am sorry you know, and I know I’ve said it a hundred times already and that it’s probably losing its meaning but I am sorry” he whispered.
“I know Harry” I whispered back, squeezing him just that little bit tighter.
“60 seconds Avery!” Squealed Laya happily, we had all taken a break from dancing and was all catching a breath by the buffet laid across several tables. The twins had really gone all out on tonight, pulling out every stop possible. I stood nestled up to her while the twins did the rounds of host, chatting to all the other Alpha’s and Luna’s as if it was second nature to them. I found myself admiring them from our corner, how easy it was for them to be in a room with so many people and not crumble under the pressure.
“10..9..8..7” the countdown had begun and I felt everyone’s eyes fall on me, I diverted my eyes to the floor.
“6..5..4” I felt myself shaking, goosebumps appearing on my arms, I rubbed then subconsciously. This was the moment of truth, I’d find out if this was actually happening, that everything they said was true or one big set up.
“3..2..1!”
And then I felt it. My nose sensed them first, a strong scent of mint tooth paste and pine trees filling the air and intoxicating me. Rain howled triumphantly in my head, she was ecstatic that they were our mates. My feet had began walking before my brain had caught up to what was happening, taking me across the room in a effort to find the cause of the scent. It felt like there was a magnet in my body pulling me to where I needed to go without me actually knowing. There they were, stood their smirking at me by a group of men huddled to the side of the dance floor. My body practically threw myself at them, leaping into the air and wrapping myself around a unsuspecting Regan.
“You were telling the truth” I gasped, staring at him hungrily, now that I was touching him every sensation in my body was turned up to max. Harry’s fingers lightly traced a line up my arm towards my neck and his touch felt electric, I let out a small moan and threw my head back.
“We were telling the truth” the mum bled back, theirs voices low and sexy. I bit down on my bottom lip trying to suppress the urge to rip their clothes off while everyone watched. Dear goddess this mate bond stuff was strong. Regan settled me back on to floor grinning, taking my hand and leading me in front of the crowd of people. My eyes searched for Laya and they found her pushing her way past people latching on to Harvey’s arm.
“As you all know we are hear you celebrate Miss Avery Winters 18th birthday!” announced Harry, grasping my other hand and rubbing his thumb gently back and forth. Everyone began cheering and smiling and my cheeks flushed rose.
“I, Regan Kieran White accept you Avery Winters as my mate and Luna of my pack” beamed Regan proudly and my mouth hung open in shock, they were accepting me in front of everyone. Many people around the room gasped, I could see the twins parents in the corner scowling.
“I, Harry James White accept you Avery Winters as my mate and Luna of my pack” smiled Harry, bringing my hand to his lips and planting a soft kiss. My eyes switched between them in shock as they looked down at me waiting, I know it was my turn to speak but the words physically wouldn’t come out. After a few quick breaths I regained my composure.
“I, Avery Winters accept Harry James White and Regan Kieran white as my mates and Alpha of my pack” I declared, then my body began to warm, my fingertips started to tingle. The first stage was done, to complete the ritual we had to mark each other which would show everyone we are mated and once I was marked there would be no going back. The twins looked at me, so much love and happiness in their eyes. Once the shock had passed everyone resumed conversation with each other. Then it dawned on me, I was supposed to be their Luna. Im eighteen with no clue on how to run a pack, what had I signed myself up for.
“Harry. Regan” I turned to see their parents stood their looking any less then pleased.
“Mother. Father” spat Harry, their presence irritating him.
“Avery” Cleo hissed, looking me up and down inspecting me “Glad to see you made a effort at-least”. I pursed my lips and pushed down the urge to grab her by the hair.
“It is my birthday after all” i scoffed, folding my arms across my chest.
“We was hoping to speak to you” Tyler muttered. The boys shared a quick gaze before stiffly nodding their heads.
“All of you” Tyler continued, this time looking straight at me. I gulped down any fear or resentment I had, tonight was about me and I wouldn’t let them ruin it.
“Fine” I stated, turning on my heels and walking upstairs in front of everyone else. What could they possibly have to say to us? I knew how they felt about me, they hated me, despised me even. I stormed up the two flights of stairs and straight into the twins meeting room. I took my place in the corner of the room as the others filed in, Harry closing the door behind them. The twins took their place behind the desk, throwing me a disapproving look and gesturing for me to go and stand with them. I shuffled from my spot to where they were, Harry sat down on the chair and Regan stood next to me.
“So spit it out. What is it?” Harry barked, I instinctively lifted a hand placing it on his head and playing with his hair. This seemed to relax him, I heard him take a deep breath in before he sat up straighter.
“We wanted to apologise” sighed Tyler, all the muscles in his face sagging. I gazed at them shocked, then the shock turned into anger.
“We reacted badly when we found out, we said and did things that we regret. We thought we were looking out for your best interests and the interests of the pack but in reality we were looking out for ourselves” he mumbled, looking at his sons, he reeked of desperation all thought it was good to see him seeking his sons approval for a change.
“Damn right you were only looking out for yourselves” snarled Regan his body tensing and he leaned closer to me and sniffed my hair, my scent calmed him and his body quickly relaxed. I moved my gaze to Cleo, who was stood their sour faced and annoyed.
“What I’m trying to say is we are sorry” Tyler sighed, the moment the words passed his lips I saw Cleo roll her eyes disapprovingly.
“I want to hear her say it” I spat, pointing my finger at her. Her face dropped as she stared back at me.
“What?” She stuttered.
“I want to hear you say it” I repeated, I could feel my blood boiling as I stood their seething in anger. She stood their terrified of my new found voice, and it honestly scared me through. Years of suppressed anger and hatred spilling out of me. After a brief awkward pause something snapped.
“I said say it!” I shouted, gripping on to the desk chair in front of me, my nails clawing at the leather. Regan placed his hands on my shoulders and massaged them gently while Harry placed and hand on top of mine.
“I-Im sorry” she yelped, taking a step away from the table.
“For what!” I screamed, tears streaming down my face.
“For the years of abuse and neglect? For robbing me of my childhood and forcing me to be a slave to you? What did I do to you for you to hate me so much” I cried, lifting a hand to wipe away the tears the kept falling. She looked at me, her eyes filling with regret before turning towards her mate.
“Is it time?” She asked, and he sighed before nodding his head and looking away ashamed. I looked between the boys just to find them as confused as I was.
“Time for what?” Harry questioned, the hand he was resting on the table curled in to a fist.
“Time we told you the truth” Tyler swallowed, sitting himself down in a chair opposite us, however Cleo remained glued in place.
“Truth about what?” Regan pushed impatiently, I threaded my arm through his and rested my head on his shoulder in a attempt to comfort him.
“We weren’t each others first mates” Cleo uttered, the boys jaws swung open and my eyes widened in shock. Tyler took the silence as his que to continue.
“When I was younger I met my mate, she was originally going to be Luna” he chocked, words getting caught in his throat.
“There was a rouge attack and she didn’t make it” he sighed, I could tell he was still heartbroken and losing her must of crushed him. They say the pain when you lose your mate is excruciating, it’s known to drive some wolfs mad.
“I met my mate the day I turned 18, he was from a neighbouring pack and I left to join him” Cleo started, her eyes filling with tears. Tyler reached out and took his mates hand.
“We had a daughter, her name was Tia. A beautiful little girl” she sobbed “She looked a lot like you” she stared straight at me. I gasped in shock, not only did the former Luna have another mate she had a daughter that I resembled.
“There was a war between packs and-“ she couldn’t manage to finish her sentence as she broke down in tears. I looked at the boys, their faces had drained of colour, I couldn’t imagine how they felt in this moment.
“Is that why you hated me so much” i squeaked, scared to interrupt but desperate to know the answer. She gave a quick nod before dissolving into a fit of tears again. All these years she hated me because I looked like her dead daughter.
“So your chosen mates?” Harry pressed, finally finding his voice.
“Yes, I became Alpha and decided I wasn’t ready. Until I met your mother I swore not to take another mate” Tyler admitted. We all sat in a uncomfortable silence, the only noise made was Cleo’s sniffling.
“We’re done here” Regan said harshly, pulling himself off of me and walking straight out of the room. Tyler and Cleo nodded, standing up firm their seats and following him out. Harry stood up and took my hand.
“Let’s get you to bed” he muttered, leading me from the room.
