Prologue: The Dream

472 Words
Ella woke with a start, her breath coming in short, sharp gasps. The dim glow of the cockpit's control panel cast eerie shadows around her, the only illumination in the vast emptiness of space. She closed her eyes, trying to shake off the lingering remnants of the dream—a dream that felt more like a memory than a mere figment of her imagination. She saw him again. A man with eyes as deep as the void, standing at the edge of a world she couldn't quite place. His hand reached out to her, but just as she was about to grasp it, the dream would shatter, leaving her with an aching sense of loss. The stars outside the viewport twinkled silently, indifferent to her turmoil. Ella ran a hand through her short, dark hair, trying to steady herself. Dreams had plagued her for as long as she could remember, but recently they had become more vivid, more intense. And always, always, it was the same man. The same outstretched hand. The same feeling that something was missing. A soft beep from the control panel broke her reverie. She glanced at the incoming message. It was from her employer, the shadowy organization known as the Black Star Consortium. Her next mission awaited her—a job that promised good pay and little information, as always. Ella sighed, pushing the dream to the back of her mind. There was no room for distractions in her line of work. She was one of the best pilots in the galaxy, known for taking on dangerous jobs and completing them with precision. Whatever this mission was, it was just another job. Another chance to lose herself in the vastness of space and forget the strange dreams that haunted her. The message was brief, as usual. Coordinates, a timeline, and a single instruction: "Meet the client at the rendezvous point. No questions." Ella rolled her eyes. The Consortium never gave details, only orders. But that was fine by her. The fewer questions asked, the fewer complications later on. She keyed in the coordinates and prepared the ship for the jump to hyperspace. As the engines hummed to life, Ella allowed herself one last glance out at the stars. Somewhere out there, she felt, was the answer to her dreams. And perhaps, this mission would bring her one step closer to finding it. As the ship lurched into hyperspace, Ella settled into her seat, letting the familiar vibrations soothe her. Whatever awaited her at the rendezvous point, she would face it head-on, just as she always did. But deep down, she couldn't shake the feeling that this mission would be different. That it would bring her face-to-face with the man from her dreams. And that when it did, nothing in her life would ever be the same again.
