Chapter 39One day in mid-December, Matthew was at Rachael's house working up plans and costs for the work to be done. He had taken apart one of the light switches in the spare bedroom to check the wiring. In the course of conversation, Rachael mentioned going to Brandon's again for the up-coming holiday.
“What? You s-spent Thanksgiving there.” He blurted it angrily, completely losing his composure. “Christmas is f-for us. I was counting on y-you being with us.”
She hesitated, completely shocked by his assumption. “Brandon's my family. I love him regardless of his faults.”
“What about M-mom and Dad? Aren't they like f-family to you?”
Rachael hadn't thought of them that way. That would be like chasing idle fantasies.
