Chapter 23Rachael hadn't decided to put Matthew out of her mind. She was curious how he could be attentive one week and then disappear for another two. Trying to keep up with him seemed futile. Then one night, deep in thought about how to solve Hunter and Melissa's new plot dilemma, she decided to give her novel a rest and turned on her cell phone. No one had called. No one ever called except Tina, when she had a day off. She punched the number for Matthew.
“Hello…” he said, sleepily, then yawned noisily into the phone.
“Hi, it's me.”
“Rachael?” The sound of covers rustling came through the phone.
“I'm sorry for calling this late. I didn't want to talk to your machine again.”
“What a surprise.” The sound of a door closing came through from his end.
