The Shadow Don

Chapter 2: The Shadow Don Isabella woke to silence. For several seconds, she didn't know where she was. She stared at the unfamiliar ceiling, her mind foggy and heavy. Then the memories returned. The warehouse. The men. Running through the rain. The alley. Alessandro Moretti. Her breath caught. She sat upright so quickly that the room spun. “No…” She pressed a trembling hand against her chest. Her heart was beating violently. She looked around. The room was enormous. Elegant. Beautiful. And completely unfamiliar. She threw the blankets aside and rushed to the door. She grabbed the handle. Locked. “No, no, no.” She twisted it again. Nothing. Panic rose in her throat. “Open this door!” Her voice cracked. She pounded against the wood. “Please!” She hated that word. She hated needing to beg. She hit the door again. “I have to go home!” The lock clicked. Isabella stumbled backward. A man in a black suit stood outside. One of the men from the warehouse. “Mr. Moretti wants to see you.” Her stomach twisted. “Tell him to come here.” “He won't.” “Then I'm not going.” The man stared at her. “You really don't understand where you are.” Isabella's anger burned through her fear. “No. I understand perfectly. I've been kidnapped.” He didn't respond. “You people dragged me here against my will!” He simply stepped aside. “Mr. Moretti is waiting.” Isabella wanted to scream. She wanted to slap someone. She wanted her mother. She wanted Matteo. Instead, she forced herself to walk. Her legs felt weak beneath her. She followed the man through the enormous mansion, trying not to let them see how frightened she was. Everything around her screamed wealth and power. Dark wood. Expensive paintings. Silent guards. Security cameras. Men who watched her without saying a word. She suddenly felt very small. Very alone. They stopped outside a pair of tall doors. The man opened them. “Mr. Moretti.” Isabella stepped inside. Alessandro stood by the window. He looked so calm. So unaffected. As if he hadn't destroyed her entire night. As if she weren't terrified. He didn't turn around. “You're awake.” Isabella stared at his back. “How could you possibly say that so calmly?” He turned. His gray eyes met hers. She hated the effect they had on her. They made her feel exposed. “You're safe,” he said. “Safe?” A bitter laugh escaped her. It sounded almost hysterical. “You kidn*pped me.” “I brought you somewhere secure.” “You took me away from my family!” Her voice shook. “My mother is waiting for me!” Alessandro said nothing. “My brother is probably wondering where I am!” Still nothing. Her eyes burned. “And you stand there like none of this matters.” His expression remained unreadable. “You're alive.” “That isn't the same thing as being safe!” Silence. Isabella realized her voice had cracked. She quickly looked away. She refused to cry in front of him. Not him. Not the man who had terrified her. But one tear slipped down her cheek anyway. She wiped it away angrily. Alessandro noticed. His expression changed almost imperceptibly. “I'm not going to hurt you.” “Then let me go.” “I can't.” “Why?” “Because you saw something you shouldn't have.” “I didn't see anything important!” “You saw me.” “That doesn't mean I know anything about you!” “You know enough.” She stared at him. “What exactly are you afraid I'll do?” “Talk.” “I already told you I won't!” “You're frightened.” “Of course I'm frightened!” Her voice echoed through the room. “I'm in a house I don't know, surrounded by armed men, because a man I have never met decided I can't leave!” Her chest rose and fell rapidly. “I don't know what happens next.” For a moment, Alessandro simply looked at her. Then he said quietly, “Neither do I.” That answer unsettled her more than a threat would have. She looked toward the desk. Then froze. Folders were spread across its surface. One had her name on it. ISABELLA ROMANO Her blood ran cold. She walked toward it. “No…” Photographs were scattered across the desk. Her apartment. Her workplace. Her mother. Matteo leaving school. A photograph of Isabella outside the grocery store. She felt sick. “You've been watching me.” Alessandro said nothing. She looked up at him. “How dare you?” Her fear turned into fury. “You followed my family?” “I had to know who you were.” “You don't get to investigate me!” “I do when your life may affect mine.” She picked up the photograph of Matteo. Her fingers trembled. “You photographed my brother.” “I needed information.” “He's a child.” Her voice broke. “Leave him out of this.” Something in her expression seemed to affect Alessandro. His eyes darkened. “He isn't involved.” “Then keep him out of your world.” “I intend to.” She studied his face. For one dangerous second, she almost believed him. Then she remembered who he was. The Shadow Don. The man people whispered about. The man who could make problems—and people—disappear. She placed the photograph down. “Who are you?” Alessandro's expression hardened. “You know who I am.” “No.” She shook her head. “I know the name.” Her voice became quieter. “I want to know the man.” Something flickered in his eyes. “You don't want to know me.” “Maybe I don't.” She swallowed. “But I'm trapped here with you.” That seemed to silence him. She looked away. “People are afraid of you.” “They should be.” “Why?” “Because fear keeps people alive.” “Or controls them.” His jaw tightened. Isabella realized she had struck something. She should have been afraid. Instead, she felt a strange surge of courage. “You're not going to control me.” He stepped closer. “You're already in my world.” She raised her chin. “I didn't choose it.” “I know.” “And I hate you for it.” His eyes stayed on hers. “You barely know me.” “I know enough.” The words came out before she could stop them. His gaze dropped briefly to her lips before returning to her eyes. The moment was so brief that she wasn't sure she'd imagined it. Isabella's pulse quickened. She stepped back. “Stay away from me.” Alessandro's expression became unreadable again. “Fine.” He walked toward the desk. “You'll stay here.” “For how long?” “As long as necessary.” “No.” She shook her head. “I have responsibilities.” “Your mother.” “My mother.” “Your brother.” “Yes.” “I know.” “Stop saying that.” Her voice cracked. “You don't know me.” His eyes softened, just slightly. “I know that you put everyone else before yourself.” Isabella stared at him. He continued. “You're carrying your family's problems as if they're yours alone.” Her eyes suddenly filled with tears. She looked away before he could see. “You know nothing about me.” “I know enough.” Then the doors opened. A man hurried inside. “Boss.” Alessandro turned. “What?” “We found something.” The man placed a phone on the desk. Alessandro looked at the screen. His face changed. Not much. But enough. Isabella noticed immediately. “What happened?” He didn't answer. Her stomach began to twist. “What happened?” “Isabella—” “Tell me.” He looked at her. “Your brother wasn't at school today.” The room disappeared around her. “What?” Her lips parted. “No.” She shook her head. “No, that's not possible.” “We've been trying to locate him.” “Call him.” “He isn't answering.” “Call him!” Her voice broke. She grabbed her phone instinctively. Then remembered they had taken it. She looked at Alessandro in desperation. “Give me my phone.” He didn't move. “Please.” It was the first time she had said it without anger. “Please, I need to call him.” Alessandro's expression remained serious. “Someone reached him before we could.” Isabella felt the blood drain from her face. “No.” She backed away. “No, no, no…” Her knees suddenly weakened. She caught the edge of the desk. Matteo's face filled her mind. His stupid jokes. His school uniform. The way he always stole the last piece of bread at breakfast. Her little brother. Her responsibility. Her baby brother. And now he was missing. Tears spilled freely down her cheeks. “This is my fault.” Alessandro stepped toward her. “No.” “I shouldn't have stopped.” “You didn't do this.” “I should have kept walking.” “This isn't your fault.” She looked up at him through tears. “Then whose fault is it?” His expression turned cold. “Someone who wants to hurt me.” Isabella stared at him. “So they'll hurt Matteo because of you.” “Yes.” The word crushed her. She covered her mouth as a sob escaped. For the first time, Alessandro's composure cracked. He moved closer. “Isabella.” She recoiled. “Don't.” He stopped. She wiped her tears with shaking hands. “You said you would protect my family.” “I will.” “How can I believe you?” “You don't have to.” His voice was quiet. “You only have to believe that I'll bring your brother home.” Isabella stared at him. She wanted to hate him. She wanted to blame him. She wanted to scream. But beneath all of it was something worse. Hope. Fragile. Terrifying. She didn't know why she was starting to believe him. Maybe because there was something in his voice. Something absolute. Something that sounded like a promise. Alessandro turned toward the door. “Where are you going?” “To find your brother.” He paused. Then looked back at her. “And this time, Isabella, I'm bringing him home.” The door closed behind him. She remained standing there, trembling. For the first time since she had met Alessandro Moretti, Isabella realized something terrifying. She didn't know whether the Shadow Don was the man who had ruined her life... Or the only man powerful enough to save it.
