Chapter 7: A Kiss That Changed Everything The rain had stopped by the time they reached the safe house. Isabella barely noticed. Her body was still reacting to the attack. Her hands trembled. Her breathing came in short, uneven pulls. And every time she blinked, she saw the muzzle of a gun pointed in their direction. Alessandro closed the door behind them. The moment the lock clicked, he turned toward her. “Are you hurt?” She shook her head. “No.” He didn't believe her. His eyes moved over her face, her arms, her shoulders. “Look at me.” She did. “Did anyone touch you?” “No.” “Are you sure?” “Yes.” He reached for her wrist. His fingers closed gently around it. There was a faint red mark where the attacker had grabbed her. Something dark flashed across Alessandro's face. “Who did this?” “I don't know.” His jaw tightened. “He put his hands on you.” “It was only for a few seconds.” “That doesn't make it better.” His voice was quiet. Too quiet. Isabella looked at him. “You're angry.” “I'm trying not to be.” She had never seen him like this. His breathing was controlled, but his shoulders were rigid. His hand remained around her wrist as though letting go was impossible. “You're shaking,” he said. “So are you.” He looked down at his hand. She was right. His fingers were trembling slightly. He released her. “I thought I was going to lose you.” The admission came so quietly that she almost missed it. Her heart tightened. “You didn't.” “I almost did.” He turned away. His hand went to the back of his neck. For a man who always seemed to know exactly what to do, he suddenly looked lost. Isabella took a hesitant step toward him. “Alessandro.” He didn't turn. “When that gun was pointed at you…” His voice broke off. She waited. “I've had people try to kill me before.” He finally faced her. “I've watched men die. I've buried people I loved. I've lived with violence long enough that I know what it looks like.” His eyes held hers. “But seeing a weapon pointed at you was different.” Isabella's breath caught. “I stopped thinking.” “You always think.” “Not then.” He stepped closer. “I only knew that I had to get between you and that bullet.” His hand rose to her cheek. He brushed his thumb beneath her eye. “You could have been gone.” His voice was rough now. “And I don't know what I would have done.” Isabella covered his hand with hers. “You saved me.” His gaze dropped to their hands. “I would do it again.” “Even if it cost you your life?” “Yes.” The answer was immediate. It frightened her. “Why?” He looked into her eyes. “Because yours matters more to me than mine.” For a moment, Isabella couldn't speak. She had expected control from Alessandro. Possessiveness. Power. She hadn't expected this. Fear. Real fear. Not for himself. For her. She whispered, “You can't protect me from everything.” “No.” His jaw tightened. “But I'll try.” She gave him a sad smile. “You can't fight the whole world for me.” “Watch me.” Despite herself, she almost laughed. The tension broke for a moment. Then Alessandro's gaze fell to her wrist again. The red mark had darkened. His expression changed. “I want the man who touched you found.” “Alessandro—” “Alive.” She stared at him. His voice remained calm. But there was something frightening underneath it. “I need information.” “You're frightening me.” His face softened immediately. He stepped closer. “I'm sorry.” That surprised her. “You don't have to apologize for being angry.” “I do when my anger scares you.” She looked at him. That was the difference. The Shadow Don frightened everyone else. But with her, he cared whether she was afraid of him. He took her hand. “Tell me what you need.” She swallowed. “My mother.” “I'll protect her.” “My brother.” “I'll find him.” “And you?” He looked at her. “What about me?” “You keep acting like you don't matter.” His expression went still. “Don't do that.” “Why?” “Because I've spent years believing my life was the price of keeping everyone else alive.” He looked away. “I don't know what to do with someone who thinks I deserve saving too.” Isabella's eyes filled with tears. “You do.” He looked back at her. “You deserve it.” Silence. Something in him seemed to surrender. He pulled her gently into his arms. Isabella pressed against his chest. His arms closed around her immediately, firmly but carefully. She could feel his heartbeat. Fast. Unsteady. Human. He lowered his face against her hair. “I'm sorry.” “For what?” “For bringing you into this.” She closed her eyes. “You didn't choose this.” “I know.” His arms tightened. “And that's what makes it worse.” He pulled back just enough to look at her. “I can survive anything they do to me.” His thumb traced her cheek. “But if they hurt you because of me…” He couldn't finish. Isabella whispered, “Then don't let them.” His eyes searched for hers. “I won't.” The words weren't a romantic promise. They were a vow. He kissed her. Slowly at first. Like he was afraid she might disappear. Then she felt the restraint in him break. His hand moved to the back of her neck, holding her close. The kiss deepened, carrying all the fear he couldn't say aloud. When they separated, his forehead rested against hers. His breathing was uneven. “Now I understand,” he whispered. “Understand what?” “Why are people afraid of love?” She looked at him. “Why?” “Because once you love someone…” His eyes moved over her face. “They become the one thing you cannot afford to lose.” His phone rang. The moment shattered. He answered. “What?” His expression hardened. “Send me the photograph.” A few seconds passed. His face became completely still. He turned the screen toward Isabella. Her mother was standing outside her apartment. A man watched from across the street. Another photograph appeared. Her mother entered the building. Then another. Matteo leaving school. Isabella's blood ran cold. Alessandro immediately pulled her behind him. His entire posture changed. “From now on,” he said to the person on the phone, “two men stay with her mother.” A pause. “Four around Matteo.” Another pause. “And nobody leaves them alone. I don't care who gives the order.” He ended the call. Isabella stared at him. “You're sending that many men?” “Yes.” “Won't that make them suspicious?” “I don't care.” “Alessandro—” “No.” He turned toward her. His eyes were hard. “They have watched your family. They followed you here. They put their hands on you.” His voice lowered. “They made the mistake of believing I would negotiate when it comes to you.” She touched his arm. “You can't control everything.” “No.” His fingers closed around hers. “But I can control what happens next.” He picked up his gun. “I want every route around your mother's apartment checked. Every camera reviewed. Every vehicle identified.” He looked at his men. “Find the person who gave the order.” Then he turned back to Isabella. “Stay beside me.” She looked into his eyes. “Not because you're ordering me to?” “No.” His voice softened. “Because I don't want to lose sight of you.” She nodded. And for the first time, Isabella understood that Alessandro's greatest danger wasn't his enemies. It was what happened to the ruthless Don when someone he loved was threatened. The world knew the Shadow Don as a man who never lost control. Isabella had just discovered the truth. He hadn't lost control yet. But for her… He was getting dangerously close.
