The Mountain King

859 Words
Without knowing their capabilities, Vanessa headed out at a pretty fast pace. The other two straggled behind at a far distance, shouting warnings of the mountains. She didn't care. Vanessa planned on getting to the shrine and getting the light to finish this month's theme. It was possible though that she would have to beat these two soon. Clearly, she wanted the high ground to launch an ambush. But those two pests wouldn't give her the time to set one. She hopped from boulder to boulder to make her way up the mountain. The was a steep cliff not too far. Knocking them over would be ideal. Thus she began charging Masamune with wind. There was a light white glow to it. One that the pair couldn't see due to it still being sheathed. It was perfect to her plan of luring the pair the center up the edge of the mountain to they take the high ground. Even better that they followed her perfectly as planned.  Hopping up the mountain again, Vanessa had them well-positioned below. She sliced her blade down at the, releasing a cyclone, shredding rocks to crumbs with the winds that shot down at the two.  The man ducked behind the woman who cursed, raising her hands to the cyclone. She stopped it just as easily, allowing the winds to fade inward into her palms.  Vanessa was more than shocked by the ability to suppress her fully-charged cyclone. She couldn't tell if this was a wind ability or something else. And given the rumbling beneath her feet, it didn't seem like she would have time to figure it out.  The mountain began shifting, by sections with a part of it rising over Vanessa's head. Below were the man and woman in defensive postures. Unlike them, Vanessa didn't plan on finding out what was rising.  She sprinted away when a giant arm, bigger than a tower, slammed in front of her, shedding its dark mist on the smaller rocks below it. It swooped her way for an instant kill when the man rushed over, jabbing his palms at it to hold it back.  There was a bodiless explosion behind Vanessa that when she looked realized the woman had recreated her cyclone, holding its power in the form of a human-sized wind disc in her palm.  She launched that disc high into the air, where it spun into a rising portion of the mountain with a little bit of vegetation on it.  Perfect aim. That chunk of rock was actually the face of an earth giant. And though its arm remained in place, it seemed to have been immobilized.  A rock flipped out at the man, of which he easily stomped to death, "We have to run away"! She wasn't dumb enough to fall for his trick. No way was he trusting a girl with the map to his objective that tried to kill him and his companion.  Following him down the mountain appeared to be enough to make him believe she was on his side. The woman was slamming air and fire abilities at the giant's head. It was nowhere near enough to defeat it. In fact, the giant was still swinging its other arm.  However, her goal was to merely divert its attention for the other two to get away and throw off its vision for her own escape.  It worked. Vanessa ran with the man around the arm to head further up the mountain, away from the giant. Here the man fired a few rockets from his arms that caught the giant's attention.  Both were clearly powerful. But what amazed Vanessa more was how well they worked together without communication. She couldn't recall seeing any team perform that well.  Regardless, she needed to figure something out. And with the man focused on shooting the giant, it was her opportunity.  She slashed her lightning-coated katana into the back of his head. Wedged into his metal skull, it took a lot of wiggling to get it out.  "V!" yelled the woman as Vanessa ran off.  The giant saw Vanessa running away, and trusted his palm toward her to create an avalanche.  The woman kneeled down next to V, to absorb the shockwave from erupting the earth beneath them. Meanwhile, V applied pressure to his head, allowing his brain to heal.  Now smoothen earth underneath Vanessa's feet crumbled away to form an earthen slide that led all the way off the steep cliff. At first, she fought, jumping to hopefully keep her balance well enough to make. Unfortunately, it didn't take long for this to fail. She was caught in the avalanche and dragged down to the cliff. Right when her fall was near, V flew out and grabbed underneath her shoulders.  Blood dripped from his head to her while the giant roared at the two. The injury was possibly why he was flying so slow and low to the ground. But after the giant was out of sight, Vanessa realized the woman was not too far behind, despite running on foot.  Clearly these two were planning on getting what they wanted without letting their guard down.
