Aiden gets home early that night and takes the twins out for pizza so I can meet Ellie and Holly for dinner. It’s not a far drive, maybe twenty minutes to Holly’s house, but when I pull up, the winter dark is complete and the house lights are already on, backlighting the winter-bare trees.
In the spring and summer, Holly’s cottage is surrounded by green leaves and bright pink azaleas. This time of year, it’s pretty barren and makes the eye-poppingly yellow front door stand out even more. Ellie’s Twelve Oaks truck is parked by the curb and I pull ahead, leaving the Bronco out of the way of anyone driving by.
