Even after Parker’s taillights dissolve into dark, I can’t bring myself to go back inside. Our argument is on repeat in my head, but it’s her expression—eyes shining with tears—more than anything that I can’t shake.
Every time I close my eyes, I see her behind my lids. Every time I take a breath, I realize she took part of me with her. There’s no going back from this. She won’t be able to look at me the same way after knowing I let the twins go.
I won’t be able to look at me the same way either. The right thing is hard. That’s what makes it the right thing.
I do one last barn check before heading back upstairs. Most of the horses are dozing in their stalls. Praise is actually lying down, breathing so deeply and sleeping so soundly, it makes me smile. I’m gl
