Chapter 1

I'm the only delivery worker in this horror game. Or, well, I was—until the new protagonist crew kidn*pped me and smashed every single one of my parcels to smithereens. "You should be honored we're letting you lead the way! Do you even know who our leader is?" I had no clue who their leader was. All I knew was that those busted parcels were meant for the horror bosses of different levels, and the custom urn the god-tier boss Bunny had picked out for her late pet was right in that pile! A cold, shrieking gust of wind howled past—the bosses were here. I curled my lips into an eerie smile at the protagonist crew… After getting run over and killed by a car, I'd been invited to work as an NPC in this horror world. The system rules gave me a little delivery trike, and I spent every day picking up and dropping off parcels, having the time of my life. That's how I became the only delivery worker in the entire horror game. Every single boss in this horror world, no matter what they ordered online, couldn't get their stuff unless I picked it up first and delivered it straight to their door one by one. Just two days ago, the pet rabbit of top-tier boss Bunny had suddenly died of a heart attack. There were no funeral homes in the horror world, and she couldn't buy things like urns anywhere. After all, in a horror game, when something kicks the bucket, you just dump it on the ground and leave it for the cleaning lady to haul away. But Bunny had raised that little rabbit from a tiny baby, holding it in her arms the whole time it grew up. Losing it out of the blue had hit her like a ton of bricks, and she couldn't bear to just throw it away. So, on my suggestion, she first asked another boss to freeze the rabbit's body, then browsed online and picked out an urn she really liked. As soon as the urn arrived, she could cremate her little rabbit and keep its ashes with her forever. Early that morning, I spotted Bunny's urn in the new batch of deliveries. I was over the moon. With this urn, Bunny, who'd been moping for days, would finally cheer up a little. With that thought, I quickly scanned all the parcels, mapped out the most efficient delivery route in my head, and packed all the packages into the trike in the order of the route. Once I was done, I glugged down a quick sip of water, hopped on my little delivery trike, and peeled out of the delivery station. Since I was crunched for time and had a ton of drops to make that day, I skipped the main road and veered straight into the bushes to take a shortcut. I twisted the throttle to pick up speed, humming a cheerful little tune under my breath. Just then, five players popped out of thin air right in front of me, blocking my path completely. I flicked my eyes up at the glittering golden text floating above their heads. Number One Protagonist Team in the Whole Server! That blinding, glowing text alone was enough to tell me these were people I absolutely could not afford to mess with. I immediately twisted the handlebars of my little three-wheeler and hightailed it the other way. But the girl leading the group suddenly called out to stop me. "Hey! You, the delivery person! I heard you're the courier who knows every inch of the roads around here. We're heading to the horror instance The Silent Manor! You're gonna show us the way!" Her bossy tone irked me a little, but I could brush it off if I tried. So I shook my head and turned her down flat. "Sorry, I've got a huge workload today, and I haven't finished my rounds yet..." Before I could finish my sentence, she yanked a huge handful of glinting gold Ghost Coins out of her pocket and hurled them straight at my face. Clink! "Guiding us once will earn you more than you make in a whole year! You gonna take us to The Silent Manor now?" Everyone knew how things worked in this horror game world. A single gold Ghost Coin from a player was equal to an entire month's pay for a regular NPC. I stared at the gold coins clinking and raining down at my feet, and I was a little tempted. As tempting as the money was, I really couldn't say yes today. I still had to rush that urn over to Bunny! "I really have urgent deliveries I need to drop off!" I stepped around them as I spoke, ready to just leave and be on my way. Right as I was about to get away, one of the male players charged straight at me and kicked me so hard I went flying into the dirt. "A lousy, no-name NPC dares to turn us down?" he exclaimed. "Do you even know who we are?" My stomach was throbbing with searing pain, and blood was trickling out of my mouth, but I didn't waste time tending to myself. I scrambled to my feet and heaved with all my might to right my tipped-over three-wheeler. The dozens of packages inside belonged to the big bosses of every major game instance! I could walk away with a few scrapes and bruises, but if those bosses' deliveries went missing? They'd fly off the handle and attack every living thing that crossed their path indiscriminately. The lead female player sauntered over. The second she got a good look at my face, she let out a sneering, mocking laugh. "Well, well, look who it is! It's that little loser!" She turned to the four people trailing behind her. "Don't you guys remember her? She's the one who was always playing the saint back in school!" With that, she pulled off the protective mask covering her face. Underneath the mask was a face I'd seen countless times in my nightmares—one that still sent a jolt of fear down my spine just looking at it. I recognized her instantly. Vivienne! Back in sophomore year of high school, she'd caught me laughing and joking with the school's ice-cold academic prodigy while we fed stray cats together. After that, she spread rumors all over school that I had a crush on him, mocking me for being a total do-gooder to anyone who'd listen. When the academic prodigy stepped up to clear my name, she hated me even more. She rallied the entire school to freeze me out entirely. She kept running her mouth too, saying I flunked every exam, my face was covered in pockmarks, and I had no right hanging out with someone like him. She was the one who deserved to be by his side, not me. There was no way I could talk my way out of the mess she'd made, so I just swallowed all the hurt and kept my head down. Right then, everyone else standing behind Vivienne pulled off their masks too. I could see every last one of them clear as day. The girl right on Vivienne's heels was her number one suck-up from back in high school. The guy who'd just kicked me to the ground was Donna, the hotheaded school bully who'd been obsessed with Vivienne for years. The other guy and girl were just their desperate simps. Donna glanced at me and sneered, "Well, well, if it isn't you!" Her little suck-up Hazel's eyes went wide. "Nora? How'd you change so much? All those little spots on your face are gone, and you actually stand up straight and carry yourself better now. Hey! Did you secretly blow money on cosmetic work?" Vivienne let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "So, what if she's a little prettier? She's still the same broke nobody she was back then! Trash like you was born to run errands and deliver packages in a horror game, nothing more." I couldn't be bothered wasting my breath on these losers. I brushed the dirt off my clothes, hopped back on my three-wheeler, and got ready to bolt. If I hung around any longer, I'd have to work overtime again. But Vivienne stepped right in front of my trike out of nowhere and slapped me hard across the face. All the fancy in-game prop rings on her fingers raked my skin, leaving five bright, bleeding streaks down my cheek. I wiped the blood off my face, and caught a whiff of that classic pay-to-win player stench rolling off her. "I said, guide us through the area. Are you deaf or something?" Her voice was oozing with that same entitled, bossy tone, and my stubbornness flared up immediately. "No," I said. "Wow, you've got some nerve, huh?" Vivienne let out a low chuckle, her red lips curling into a sneer. She fished a pistol from her waist and pressed the cold muzzle hard against my skull. "I heard you NPCs are already dead in the real world. If you get killed again in this horror game, you'll vanish into thin air for good—nothing left of you at all. Wanna find out what that feels like?" I stared at the gun in her hand. Its price was a 9 followed by ten zeros, an astronomically huge sum I could never afford in a million years. The scene ground to a standstill. The air was so tense you could slice it with a knife. Just then, Donna scoffed and stepped forward to wrap his hand around Vivienne's wrist. "Calm down, Vivienne. Scaring her a little's enough. We still need her to show us the way, after all!" At that, Vivienne shot me a venomous glare, but reluctantly lowered the gun and stuffed it back where it came from. Donna, though, pulled a coil of rope out of nowhere like a cheap magician. Before I could shake off the jitters from having a gun to my head, he grabbed me roughly and tied me up so tight I could barely breathe. "You're in such a rush to deliver those packages, huh? If we destroy 'em, you won't have anything to deliver anymore. Then you'll have all the time in the world to guide us!" Hardly had the words left his mouth when the other three lackeys, catching a pointed look from Donna and Vivienne, kicked open the cargo door of my delivery trike. They hauled every last parcel out and dumped them carelessly on the ground. "What even is all this junk?" "Cat food, dog food, and a bunch of random weird grass!" "Whoa, hold on—there's an urn here too?" Hazel held up Bunny's custom urn, her eyes practically bulging out of her head. "Figures it's all cheap broke loser garbage! This is what you were prioritizing over guiding us?" Right after she finished speaking, Hazel just dropped her hand. The urn crashed to the ground with a sharp c***k. "NO!" I was tied up so tight I couldn't move an inch. All I could do was watch, helpless, as Bunny's urn shattered into a thousand tiny pieces. After that, the group ripped open every single package. Anything smashable got smashed; anything that didn't break got torn out of its packaging, dumped on the ground, and stamped on a few times for good measure. "All of this is total garbage. It's making me sick just looking at it!" Vivienne pinched her nose shut, her face twisted with disgust. The other three lackeys rushed to chime in. "Everything Vivienne eats and uses is top-tier luxury stuff. Even her socks are custom-made, 200K a pair! No wonder she can't stand looking at this cheap, gross garbage!" "Exactly! Forget the other stuff—any random ring on your finger, Vivienne, is worth more than what Nora could earn delivering packages for several lifetimes!" "All the packages are done for now. We smashed everything we could, and ruined the rest so they're totally useless!" "Perfect, now get Nora on her feet so she can show us the way!" "We have to get to The Silent Manor before eight o'clock!" While they were running their mouths, every last one of them turned to look at me. I stared at the pile of mangled, ruined packages, and knew I was out of options. I let out a heavy sigh. "You want a guide? Fine. I'll take you there." They wanted to go to The Silent Manor, huh? Perfect. The boss of The Silent Manor was a huge golden retriever, and those idiots had dumped and ruined all the dog food he'd ordered. A giant golden retriever boss with no kibble to eat? Yeah, that guy's not someone you want to mess with when he's hungry.
