Damian swiftly covered her eyes, then shot me a careless look.
"This is all her payback."
Payback? My lips twisted into a bitter smile as a hollow laugh escaped me.
"Kate, what's so funny?"
I met his piercing gaze head-on, speaking slowly, word by word.
"My greatest punishment was ever loving you."
Because of him, I lost both parents, my unborn child, and endured humiliation from everyone.
Once the most dazzling rose in all of Stonehaven, now worth less than the dirt underfoot.
"What did you say?" His face went pale, shock flickering in his eyes.
Eva suddenly clutched her stomach, whining, "Damian, my tummy hurts..."
In a panic, Damian scooped her up and snapped at the maid, "Get the family doctor now!"
Watching his frantic concern, I remembered my first child.
Not even given a chance to grow, yet killed by its own father's brutal kick.
Numbly, I dragged myself to the attic, rummaged for the first-aid kit, and doused my wounds with expired alcohol, punishing myself.
As if this burning sting could somehow numb the agony tearing through my soul.
"Kate, you're really hard to kill." The sharp click of heels approached. Eva dropped her sweet facade, her face now twisted with open mockery.
"Who knew the great Kate would end up like this?"
I didn't bother looking up, just scoffed. "Must be tiring, pretending you're even pregnant. Too ashamed to show your fake belly?"
"Oh, you figured it out?"
She twisted the diamond ring around her finger, smirking.
"Kate, if you'd just let me marry him back then, none of this would've happened."
"First your father, then your baby... I wonder how long your sickly mother will last? Forgot to mention, Damian promised my child will inherit the Black family."
A storm of grief and fury rose inside me. Gritting my teeth, I lurched to my feet and spat blood in her face.
"You'll get what's coming to you."
She raised an eyebrow, cool as ever. "Let's see who really pays the price."
Footsteps pounded closer. Then Eva let out a piercing scream.
"Ah!" With a theatrical gasp, she tumbled backward, right into his waiting arms.
"Kate! How dare you push her?!" he roared, his voice a thunderclap of fury.
The moment she spotted him, her delicate features crumpled into picture-perfect tearful innocence. "Damian, don't blame Kate!" A broken sob escaped her lips as she clutched his sleeve. "It was my fault. I only wanted to check on her injuries, but then..."
Damian's breath turned ragged, his eyes dark as a gathering storm. "Well, Kate? Nothing to say for yourself?"
Oh, the bitter irony. Once, I'd have clawed my own heart out pleading my innocence.
Now? My gaze remained lifeless as stagnant water.
"Even if I explained," I said flatly, "would you believe me?"
A cruel, mocking laugh tore from his throat. "A pathological liar like you? Never."
Then... pain. He yanked me like a worthless sack toward the gaping stairwell.
"Hurt Eva?" His whisper was a blade. "Pay the price."
His foot lashed out without warning, a brutal kick to my abdomen. c***k! My body hit the landing hard. Agony bloomed, hot and thick, as blood streaked down my thighs, spreading in an ever-growing crimson stain. Too much blood.
The nearest maid's horrified shriek pierced the air:
"Miss Bennett! Oh God! She's bleeding everywhere!"
