Chapter-20 The USB

649 Words
The house was quiet again — but a different kind of quiet. Not grief. Not fear. Expectation. Aditya sat before the laptop at the dining table. The USB drive lay beside him, small and ordinary, yet heavy with everything they had been searching for. Riya stood behind him, fingers gently resting on the back of his chair. Meera sat nearby, clutching Rajiv’s letter to her heart. Anika watched from the side, her expression sharp — alert. Suresh paced slowly near the window, as if checking the street every few seconds. Outside, the sky had darkened, clouds gathering for rain. Aditya: “We open it. But we stay calm. No matter what we see.” Riya nodded. Her voice was barely above a whisper. Riya: “Do it.” Aditya slid the USB into the laptop. The screen flickered. A folder appeared: TRUTH_01 His throat tightened. He opened it. Inside — scanned documents, emails, and a video file labeled: Rajiv_Final_Record.mp4 Meera covered her mouth. Aditya clicked the video. --- The Video Rajiv appeared on the screen. Not the smiling version they remembered — but tired, serious, eyes heavy with something he carried alone for too long. His voice was calm. Measured. Resigned — but not defeated. > “If you are seeing this, it means they succeeded in silencing me.” Riya gasped. Meera broke — silently — tears spilling down her cheeks. Rajiv continued: > **“The company is funneling funds through charitable trusts into private accounts overseas. Names you see in the documents are not accidents. They are willing participants. I have reported this internally. I was ignored. Then pressured. Then threatened. If something happens to me… Do not go to the police first. They are already compromised.”** Anika’s eyes sharpened — she understood the risk instantly. > **“Find allies outside the city. People who owe nothing to the corporation. And when you reveal the truth… do it all at once. In sunlight. Where lies cannot hide.”** Rajiv’s expression softened. He looked… almost at peace. > **“Meera, I’m sorry. For leaving you with this burden. Aditya… be more patient than I was. Riya… don’t let anger steal your kindness. I love you all. More than anything I ever built.”** The screen went black. No one moved. Everything inside the house felt suspended — like the world was holding its breath with them. Finally, Riya leaned forward and pressed her forehead to the table. Not in defeat. In grief and strength intertwined. Meera whispered: “He knew… he knew this day would come.” --- The Documents Anika and Aditya began reviewing the files: Transaction spreadsheets Board meeting memos Signed approvals Names Dates Account numbers Shell organizations And hidden payments It was everything. Clear. Detailed. Undeniable. Suresh: “This is enough to bring down the entire board.” Anika: “Which means they are going to panic when they realize we have it.” Aditya closed the laptop. His voice was quiet — steady with new purpose. Aditya: “Then we move before they do.” Riya looked up. Her eyes were no longer unsure. They were certain. Riya: “We expose everything. Completely. Publicly. We don’t hide. We don’t delay.” Suresh nodded slowly. Suresh: “To do that, we need someone who can broadcast without filtering. Someone independent.” Anika exhaled. She already knew the answer. Anika: “I know a journalist. Someone who’s been waiting for a story like this.” Aditya looked at her. Trust wasn’t spoken — it was simply there. Aditya: “Call them.” --- Outside, the first raindrops fell. Soft at first. Then heavier. The kind of rain that signals a shift — the end of one chapter and the beginning of war. Inside the house, the family sat together. Not afraid. Not broken. Ready. --- End of Chapter 20
