A freaking Avernatti was running toward them. Memories of Amy's first night in Noira when the monstrous ape had clubbed her into unconsciousness rushed inside her head. Amy's breath came out in quick pants. Her hands were shaking as she tried to grasp something, anything. But there was nothing to hold on to. No railings. No handholds. Just the reins and the hard, firm back of Gilroy. The huge ape was at least a hundred yards away, but Amy could feel the ground shake with its every step. Its large arms swung wildly, hitting trees and uprooting them like toothpicks. Every now and then, the ape would roar and send a loud, menacing blast of air that shook the treetops.
