Chapter Three: Shadows of Trust

1476 Words
As the tall guy rushes across the woods, Liora's heart thumps against her ribs, her arms gripping to his massive shoulders. Like a storm, his great frame carves through the undergrowth; branches break in his wake. Her pulse does not slow, but the shouts of Caspian's soldiers fade, swallowed by the thick trees surrounding an empty building. Thorns catch her shredded gown, and her calf throbbing where the wolf bit her. She stares up at her rescuer, those searing amber eyes, the marks on his face. He is not human. Not quite. Still, something about him gives her the feeling of… safe? He swerves suddenly, ducks beneath a low overhang, and kicks open the door of a dilapidated building buried by tangled vines. The air inside smells of wet wood and soil; it is thick and musty. He lowers her onto a shaky bench, the wood under her load creaking. “Stay here,” he growls, his voice rough as gravel, his amber eyes scouring the shadows through a cracked window. "They won't locate you here. Not yet. "You're bleeding," she exclaims, observing a terrible gash on his right arm, blood dripping onto the dirt ground. Her eyes moved around the darkened space, rotting shelves, a rusty lantern burning in a corner, and there a dusty medical kit concealed behind a damaged chair. Her calf burns, and she stands wincing before reaching the kit, her hands shaking. "Let me help." You rescued me. I should you.” His eyes narrow to slits as he recoils. His voice is a deep snarl that makes her freeze. "Don't touch me," he barks. The kit wobbles in her hand as her heart skips a beat. He is looking at her with a stormy, chaotic, angry, and unidentifiable look. His fists grip at his sides as he responds, "I don't need your assistance," but his voice wavers. Though he warns her, Liora swallows and draws closer. "You're hurt," she insists, her tone gentle but strong. "I'm not abandoning you like this." Her eyes locked on his, begging. Kael feels a jolt, the mate bond, tugging at his core like a wildfire. She’s human. How can this be? Her scent, mixed with the blood from that cavern in the mountain, floods his senses. That drop of blood opened the Lock, summoning him to the mountains where she trespassed with her team. But this pull… it’s something ancient, something he can’t fight. He looks at her, his mind racing, the connection deepening with each stride she takes. She places the kit on the bench, takes out a bandage, and introduces herself as Liora. "Please just remain motionless." She reaches for his arm, her fingertips brushing across his flesh, and he recoils, a growl rumbling in his chest. The warmth of her touch triggers something primal that he cannot suppress. She isn't going to back down, though, as evidenced by her furrowed forehead and steady yet cautious actions as she cleans the wound. She ties the bandage and murmurs, "Thank you," her voice quivering with appreciation. “For saving me. I’d be dead if you hadn’t come.” Kael grunts, stepping back, needing distance. “I’m Kael,” he mutters, avoiding her gaze, his voice gruff. He doesn’t tell her about his pack, the Draven dynasty, or the curse tying him to her blood. Liora is a trespasser, his pack elders would execute her for breaching their sacred realm. But the mate bond… it’s clouding his judgment, making him question everything. He can’t let her know his intentions. Not yet. “I followed your scent,” he admits, his tone clipped. “From the mountains. Where your blood… triggered something.” Her eyes widen, a spark of curiosity flickering. “Triggered what?” she asks, stepping closer, her voice laced with urgency. “That cavern, it had wolf symbols, a door… What is it? Who are you, really?” He turns away, his boots thudding on the dirt floor, and yells, "Enough." "I must leave." He can’t stay, not with her questions, not with the bond pulling him closer. He needs to take her back to his pack for trespassing, but the thought of her facing the elders twists his gut. They’d kill her. A human in their world? She’d be dead before she could speak. But he can’t leave her here either, not with those men hunting her. “Wait!” Her voice breaking with desperation, Liora runs after him. Her nails dig into his flesh as she holds his arm, her fingers trembling. "Please don't desert me! Please!” Her chest was heaving, and tears glistened in her emerald eyes as she struggled for breath. "I...I ran because I am meant to marry this guy tomorrow, Caspian. He is heartless; he only cares about power, not me. He will murder my father if I do not return, yet I cannot wed him! Her knees buck, she grabs his arm closer, and a sob escapes. “I'm imploring you, Kael; don't leave me alone! They'll find me!” Kael's jaw tightens as his amber eyes flare with disagreement. “I don’t give a damn about your issues," he snarls as she shakes him off with a fast jerk. Her anxiety and tears sting him like claws, awakening something he cannot explain. He storms toward the door, the mate Bond screaming at him to stay, but he ignores it, his boots kicking up dust. Her footsteps follow, light and frantic, her sobs echoing in the small hut. Liora kept following him despite his warning. “Stop following me!” he thunders, turning to confront her, his voice like a clap of thunder that shakes the walls. She falls backward, her tear-streaked face white, yet her eyes blaze with tenacity. Liora continued trailing him as they exited the structure. Though her silver-blonde hair was torn and tangled with leaves, she kept coming, her hands outstretched. He yells, his claws spreading as he struggles against the desire to shift, "I said stop! I cannot bring you along! My… my people, they’d kill you for being here! You don’t belong in my world!” Her breath catches, realization dawning. “Your world?” she whispers, stepping closer despite his warning, her voice trembling with awe. “The dynasty… it’s real, isn’t it? That cavern, the wolf symbols, it’s all connected to you! I’m a historian. I need to know more!” She falls to her knees with tears running down her cheeks and her hands clasped together as though in prayer. "Please, Kael, bring me with you! I'll pass away here, and Caspian's troops will find me! I'm imploring you!” Her voice cracks, her body is trembling with sobs, and her hands extend toward him. Kael's chest stiffens; her request cuts him like a sword. Though his pack's customs scream otherwise, the mate bond hums encouraging him to shield her. With a growl, he runs a hand through his dark hair, his scars flashing in the faint light of the lamp. "Damn it," he whispers, his voice deep, resolving splitting. Each of her cries stabs his heart. His amber eyes looking hers, he stoops and caresses her shoulders, his touch firm but not harsh. He barks, his tone tinged with annoyance, "Fine. I will bring you to my pack. You, though, hold your tongue and do exactly what I tell you.” She nods, tears still falling, a trembling smile breaking through. She whispers, her hand shaking as she brushes her face, "Thank you." Tightly jawed, he raises her to her feet and guides her out into the woods; the mate bonds throbbing more strongly with each stride. As the sun sinks low, the woodlands close around them, shadows growing to form eerie patterns on the earth. Meanwhile, in the city, Caspian bursts into Lord Veyne mansion, to meet Liora's father, his polished shoes clicking on the wooden floor. With his cane in his hand and his shaky body shivering, Lord Veyne sits at the window and looks out at the skyline. Caspian growls and throws his hand down on the dining table, causing the glassware to rattle. "I...I'm not sure!" Lord Veyne stammers, a violent cough racking his chest. “She ran, I swear, I didn’t…” “Enough lies!” Caspian cuts him off, leaning in close, his gray eyes cold as steel. “You have 24 hours to bring Liora back, or I’ll bankrupt your company. Every cent, gone. And that treatment for your illness?” He smirks, cruel and sharp, his voice a deadly whisper. “I’ll make sure you never get it. You’ll die, old man, and I’ll make it slow.” He straightens, adjusting his coat, and strides out, leaving Lord Veyne pale and shaking, the clock ticking down as the city hums outside, oblivious to the storm brewing.
