The phone rang three times before a voice answered.
"Agent Michael Chen speaking." The voice was professional, measured. "Who is this?"
Elara's hand trembled as she held Julian's phone to her ear. "This is Elara Vance. Julian Cross gave me your number."
There was a pause on the other end. Then Chen spoke again, his voice cautious. "Ms. Vance. I've been expecting your call."
"Expecting? How could you”
"You're Julian's mistress. You've been gathering evidence against him for eighteen months. You've been feeding information to journalists and anonymous contacts. You're planning to destroy him."
Elara's blood ran cold. "How do you know that?"
"I'm an FBI agent, Ms. Vance. It's my job to know things." Another pause. "But what you don't know is that I'm also the person who's been protecting you. Every time you got close to exposing yourself, I cleaned up the trail. Every time one of your contacts got too curious, I made them disappear."
"You're lying."
"Am I? Think about it, Elara. You've been working against Julian for five years. You've made countless mistakes. And yet somehow, you've never been caught. Why do you think that is?"
Elara's mind raced. She had always wondered why her investigation had been so easy. Why no one had ever questioned her. Why Julian had never suspected a thing.
Until now.
"Julian says he's an informant," she said slowly. "He says you're his handler. He says he's been working with you for three years to bring down a trafficking ring."
"All true," Chen confirmed. "Julian Cross is a hero. He's risked his life to help us dismantle one of the most dangerous criminal organizations in the world. And you've been trying to destroy him."
"He destroyed my family," she said, her voice breaking. "He killed my father."
"I know about your father, Elara. I know about everything. And I also know that Julian is not the man you think he is. Yes, he did terrible things in the past. He was ruthless. He destroyed companies. He ruined lives. But he changed. He's been trying to make amends for years. He's been working with us to save innocent people."
"I don't believe you."
"I can prove it to you. Come to the FBI field office tomorrow morning. I'll show you everything the case files, the evidence, the testimony. I'll show you who Julian Cross really is."
Elara was silent for a long moment. Then she said, "I'll be there."
She ended the call and handed the phone back to Julian. He was watching her with desperate eyes, his face pale, his hands clenched at his sides.
"Well?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper. "Do you believe me now?"
"I don't know what to believe," she said honestly. "Chen says I should come to the FBI office tomorrow. He says he can prove everything."
"Then go." Julian stepped closer, his gray eyes searching her face. "Go and see for yourself. Find out who I really am. And when you know the truth, come back to me."
"And if I don't come back?"
His face crumpled. "Then I'll understand. I'll understand that I'm not worthy of you. That I never was."
Elara looked at him, at the man she had sworn to destroy. At the man who had held her through the night, who had whispered her name like a prayer, who had looked at her like she was the most precious thing in the world.
"I need time," she said. "I need to think."
"Take all the time you need." He stepped back, giving her space. "I'll be here.
That night, Elara lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, her mind churning.
She had spent five years hating Julian Cross. Five years planning his destruction. Five years convincing herself that he was a monster.
But now, everything she thought she knew was falling apart.
Julian was an FBI informant. He had been working for years to bring down a trafficking ring. He had risked his life to save innocent people. He had changed.
And yet, there was still the video. The images of him standing over a dead woman. The evidence that he had been involved in something terrible.
She needed to know the truth. She needed to see the FBI files. She needed to understand who Julian Cross really was.
She finally drifted off to sleep, her dreams filled with images of her father's face, of Julian's gray eyes, of the young woman crying in the video.
The next morning, Elara dressed carefully and made her way to the FBI field office. The building was imposing, a fortress of concrete and glass. She felt small as she walked through the doors, her heart pounding.
"Elara Vance," she told the receptionist. "I'm here to see Agent Michael Chen."
The receptionist nodded, making a call. A few minutes later, Chen appeared, looking exactly as she remembered professional, measured, calm.
"Ms. Vance," he said, extending his hand. "Thank you for coming. Please, follow me."
He led her through a maze of corridors, past offices and interview rooms, to a private conference room. Inside, a thick folder sat on the table, marked with the FBI seal.
"Everything you need to know is in here," Chen said, gesturing to the folder. "The trafficking ring. Julian's involvement. The evidence we've gathered over the past three years."
Elara sat down, her hands trembling as she opened the folder. What she saw made her breath catch.
The file was extensive, filled with names, dates, and locations. There were photographs of the trafficking victims men, women, and children rescued from shipping containers. There were witness statements, testimonies from survivors. And there was evidence of Julian's cooperation communication logs, undercover operations, reports of his contributions to the investigation.
"He's been instrumental in bringing down the ring," Chen said. "Without him, we would have lost hundreds of victims. He's saved countless lives."
"But the video," Elara said, her voice shaking. "The video of him shooting the woman."
"Maria." Chen's expression softened. "She was a victim. By the time Julian found her, she was already dead. He shot the camera to destroy evidence of her suffering. It was an act of mercy, not murder."
Elara closed her eyes, the weight of the truth crashing down on her.
"I've been wrong about him," she said softly. "I've been wrong about everything."
"Not entirely." Chen's voice was gentle. "Julian Cross did terrible things in the past. He destroyed your father. He ruined lives. He was a ruthless businessman who would do anything to win. But he changed, Elara. He saw the evil in his own company and he chose to fight it. He chose to become a better man."
"And now?"
"Now he's one of the most valuable assets we have. And he's in love with you. He's been in love with you for months. He knew you were trying to destroy him, and he loved you anyway."
Elara felt tears prick at her eyes. "I don't deserve him."
"Maybe not." Chen smiled faintly. "But that's not for me to decide. That's for you and him to figure out."
Elara left the FBI field office feeling like a completely different person.
She had spent years hating Julian Cross. Years building her revenge. Years convincing herself that he was a monster.
But he wasn't a monster. He was a man who had made terrible mistakes and was trying to make amends. A man who had risked his life to save innocent people. A man who had loved her despite her betrayal.
She walked through the streets of Veridia, her mind churning. She needed to see him. She needed to talk to him. She needed to make things right.
When she finally arrived at the penthouse, Julian was waiting for her. He was pacing the living room, his face pale with worry. He looked up when she entered, his gray eyes searching her face.
"Elara," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "Did you go to the FBI office?"
"Yes." She crossed the room to stand in front of him. "I saw everything. The case files, the evidence, the testimony. I saw who you really are."
Julian's face fell. "And who am I?"
"A hero," she said softly. "You're a hero, Julian. You've been saving innocent people for years. You've been risking your life to bring down a trafficking ring. And I've been trying to destroy you."
Tears streamed down her face. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I was wrong about everything. I was consumed by revenge, and I couldn't see the truth."
Julian stepped closer, his hands cupping her face. "Elara, you have nothing to apologize for. Your father died because of me. Your family was destroyed because of me. You had every right to hate me."
"But you changed. You became a better man. And I was too blind to see it."
"You see it now." He wiped her tears with his thumbs. "That's all that matters."
"Can you forgive me?" She looked up at him, her eyes shining. "Can you forgive me for everything I've done?"
Julian was quiet for a long moment. Then he smiled, a soft, loving smile. "I forgave you months ago, Elara. The moment I realized I loved you."
She felt her heart burst with love and relief. "I love you, Julian. I love you so much it scares me."
"I love you too." He pressed his forehead against hers. "And I'm not going to let you go. Not now, not ever."
He kissed her then, deep and tender, pouring every ounce of his love into the embrace. And when they finally broke apart, Elara knew that everything she had been through had been worth it.
Because she had found love. She had found redemption. And she had found a man worth fighting for.
That night, they lay in each other's arms, talking about the future.
"We need to finish this," Julian said. "The trafficking ring is still out there. Victor Kane is still in control. We need to bring them down together."
"Together," Elara agreed. "I'm with you. Every step of the way."
"It's dangerous. They could hurt you. They could kill you."
"I don't care." She looked up at him, her eyes fierce. "I'm not afraid. As long as I'm with you, I'm not afraid of anything."
Julian kissed her forehead. "Then let's do this. Let's bring them down. Let's end this once and for all."
And together, they began to plan.
