Quinn POV
Frey, you there?
Yeah hun, I’m here. Came her weak reply from the back of my mind. Damn Wolfsbane…
Was that real? Did we just meet the moon goddess?
Yes. She was real.
I’m sorry Frey, get some rest. The Wolfsbane should wear off soon. With that she curled up in a ball in the back of my mind and fell asleep. Poor girl. Wolfsbane weakens us but because we are alphas it would take a large amount to kill us. I shudder to think of what it would have done to poor Kris.
I turn my face to see the small boy sitting next to me. He was adorable with his big brown eyes and soft brown hair. I could see red undertones in his hair causing it to look like it is shimmering or glowing. He had a round face with a small button nose. Looking at him cause my heart to wrench. I’ve wanted my own pups for so long but I refuse to settle for a chosen mate.
“K-“ I was about to speak when pain radiated through my face. It throbbed and pulsed and I realized the cuts on my face had not healed yet. I shot my Beta a look of panic and he smiled at me with tears in his eyes. “I’m sorry Alpha but the Wolfsbane is slowing down the healing process and unfortunately the silver will cause scaring. It’ll be a day or two before it’s finished healing.” I felt the blood drain from my face. Scaring. I would have scars on my face. From the feel of it the marks went from my hair line all the way down to my chest. I wouldn’t be able to move my face much for a few days.
I mind link my Beta and have him ask Kris if he can read, he replies that he can. I then ask for a pen and paper.
How old are you? I write for Kris.
“I’m 7” he answered after reading out loud, stuttering while trying to pronounce what I had written.
What grade are you in?
“I’m in grade two!” When he started to struggle with the words I had Caleb help him sound it out. They were so cute sitting side by side while Caleb helped him read the words.
I mind linked Caleb. I want you to arrange to have the Orphanage moved into the pack house. There is a whole wing that is not being used, except by guests for big events but we have not had an event like that since I took over as Alpha. Move them into the empty wing. Have them tear down the old house. We will build a new wing onto the pack house at a later date for guests.
Yes Alpha. Came his reply. I want the Orphans moved closer to the safe room. I don’t know why they were put into the house for far from the security of the pack house. That building is unguarded and having the kids run across the field to the safety of the pack house is ridiculous. I turned to Kris.
Does the lady in charge of the Orphans know where you are?
After he sounded it out with Caleb I saw his little face fall as he clung onto his stuffed wolf and bear. Tears started to pool in his eyes. “No. She’s so busy with the other kids that she never seems to notice when I wander off to the woods to play with Jasper. I make sure to come back when it starts to get dark! But I don’t want to go back to there please! I’ll be good and quiet so you can rest but please don’t make me go back!”
Who is Jasper?
His face went a little pale and he started to shift a bit in his seat. “I wasn’t supposed to tell people about him.”
WHO IS JASPER? I point to the question insistently. “Kris, who is Jasper? Is he one of the other Orphans?” Caleb asked him, worry written on his face.
“He is my bear. He said we can’t tell anyone cuz if they know I’m a hybrid I could get into trouble. What’s a hybrid?”
The blood drained from my face and I felt the shock radiate through me. A hybrid? In our pack? Who had his parents been? I don’t remember any bears in the pack when I took over. I looked to Caleb but found him to be just as surprised. A hybrid. A BEAR hybrid. There are not many in existence. Bears are lone creatures that don’t run in packs so they don’t do well when mated to wolves. Most bear/wolf matings ended in rejection.
Alright Kris. You can stay here for now.
I started to feel a little drowsy so I sent my Beta to check on the progress of moving the children to the empty wing. I gave the remote to the tv to Kris but put my fingers to my lips to show him to keep it down. I closed my eyes and soon I was asleep despite Kris having some goofy cartoon on loudly.
When I woke up I found Kris sleeping on the bed beside me, curled up against my side his sweet little arm across my abdomen and his head tucked into my arm pit. A small stream of drool running down the side of his face.
We are going to keep him.
I almost jumped when I heard Frey talk to me, she sounded stronger. Are you feeling better Frey?
Yes darling I am. We are keeping him.
Frey, he is not our pup. Do you have any idea the kind of paper work and such?
So then do it. This is my pup. We are keeping him.
I couldn’t even fault her. I looked at Kris and my heart lurched. I have wanted a pup for so long and here was Freya giving me permission to keep the boy who stole my heart.
I gently nudged Kris awake and helped him back into the chair since he was so drowsy and sleepy. Kris, how would you like to come live in the pack house with me?
He stumbled his way through reading the note and when he finished he jumped up and jumped into my lap. “Yes! Please! I’d really like that! I could live with my war Queen!” I pulled him into me with a tight hug and patted his back. I had a huge smile and tears started to form, when suddenly my face dropped. I had smiled. It didn’t hurt! “My face doesn’t hurt anymore!” I jumped up and looked in the closest mirror. There were bright red scars running down my face and onto my chest but they were healing much faster then the doctor had told Caleb.
Just then the doctor came into the room. “Alpha! You’re up. How-“ she stopped short when she looked at my face. “Well that was a lot faster then I was expecting! I guess your Alpha blood helped you kick the Wolfsbane faster then the average wolf!” She had a huge smile on her face but her eyes suddenly flashed with pity as she looked at the scars. “Unfortunately no blood, even Alpha blood, can heal silver away completely. You will have permanent scars across your face and down to your chest.”
As she said this I heard the sadness in her voice so I looked on the mirror again. I realized then why she was so sad. The scars ran the whole length of my face. The scars ran through my eyebrow, pulled my eyelid down slightly causing my eyes to look somewhat uneven and ran through my lips. I was disfigured. No mate would want me now. I closed my eyes and felt my heart break like a mate bond snapping. I would not have a mate.
I opened my eyes and fire ran through my veins. Anger burned inside me and without noticing my fist went through the mirror. I pulled on a sweater and pulled up the hood, moving my hair over my face and turning from the doctor and Kris. His eyes were big with fear while he looked at my bleeding fist. “Are you ok?” He asked teaching for my fist. I pulled away before he could touch it and turned to the doctor. “Have my beta come and bring Kris to his new room on the Alpha floor.” I turned without a reply and left the hospital. I went straight to the training grounds and stripped shifting into Frey mid stride. When her feet settled on the ground she leaned her head back and howled at the moon with such sadness as though cursing the moon goddess for me.
