Chapter Four - Disappearing

1073 Words
The drive lasted less than forty minutes. It felt like a lifetime. Amara sat rigidly in the back of the SUV while rain hammered against the windows. No one spoke. Not Damien. Not the security team. Not her. She could still hear the woman's voice. If you want the boy alive, Damien... come alone. His wife. The word kept replaying inside her head. Wife. Every memory of the past two weeks felt poisoned now. The phone calls. The concern. The way he looked at her. The way he made her believe she was the only person he was thinking about. A lie. Every bit of it. Beside her, Damien remained silent. For the first time since she met him, he looked tired. Not physically. Something deeper. Like a man watching everything he built collapse around him. Good. A part of her wanted him to suffer. Another part hated that she still cared whether he made it through the night. The contradiction made her feel sick. The SUV finally turned into an abandoned industrial estate near the waterfront. Empty warehouses stretched into darkness. Rainwater pooled across cracked concrete. One security guard turned around. "Sir. We found the location." Damien nodded once. "Stay with her." "No." Every head turned toward Amara. "No?" Damien repeated. "My son is in there." His jaw tightened. "And I am getting him back." "You stay in the vehicle." "No." The word came out sharper this time. Angrier. "Haven't you made enough decisions for me already?" Silence followed. Damien looked away first. A tiny victory. But it felt hollow. Finally he said quietly, "Fine." They moved together. Rain soaked them almost immediately. Security spread out around the warehouse. Weapons drawn. Tension pressed against the night like a living thing. Then a voice echoed from inside. "Damien." The warehouse doors stood open. A woman stepped forward. Elegant. Beautiful. Terrifyingly calm. She wore a dark coat and black gloves. The same woman from the photographs. The same woman who had taken Ethan. Sophia Vale. Amara hated her instantly. Sophia's eyes moved across the group. Then settled on Amara. A smile touched her mouth. "Interesting." Damien's voice hardened. "Where is the boy?" Sophia ignored him. Instead she studied Amara carefully. "So this is her." Amara felt like prey beneath that gaze. Sophia laughed softly. "I expected someone different." Damien stepped forward. "Enough." For the first time, Sophia's expression changed. Not fear. Resentment. Years of it. "You embarrassed me." Her voice stayed calm. "You humiliated me publicly." "Stop this." "No." The word cracked through the warehouse. For a second all traces of elegance vanished. What remained was anger. Raw and ugly. "You disappeared for weeks." Her eyes flickered toward Amara. "And now everyone knows why." The silence that followed felt dangerous. Amara suddenly understood something. This wasn't about Ethan. Not really. This was about Damien. And whatever war existed inside their marriage. Sophia folded her arms. "The boy is unharmed." Relief hit Amara so hard her knees almost weakened. "Where is he?" Sophia looked toward the office above the warehouse floor. A small door opened. Ethan appeared. "Mummy!" Amara ran before anyone could stop her. She barely remembered crossing the room. One second he was upstairs. The next he was in her arms. She held him so tightly he squeaked. "Mummy, I couldn't call you." "I know." Tears blurred her vision. "I know, baby." He wrapped both arms around her neck. "I missed you." That broke her completely. She kissed his hair. His forehead. His cheeks. Just to prove he was really there. Alive. Safe. Behind her, voices continued. Sharp. Dangerous. She barely listened until Sophia suddenly said: "Choose." The word echoed through the warehouse. Amara turned. Sophia was staring directly at Damien. "Choose her." A pause. "Or keep your company." Nobody moved. Nobody breathed. Even the security guards looked uneasy. Damien's face became unreadable. Sophia smiled bitterly. "That's what I thought." But Damien surprised everyone. Including Amara. "I already chose." Silence. Then Sophia laughed. A broken sound. "You fool." The sadness in her voice was somehow worse than the anger. For a second, Amara almost felt sorry for her. Almost. Then Sophia looked directly at her. And everything changed. "You should leave him." Amara froze. Sophia's gaze never wavered. "You think you're the first woman he's tried to save?" Damien stepped forward instantly. "Stop." But Sophia continued. "Everyone around him gets hurt." The words landed heavily. Because they weren't entirely wrong. Sophia smiled sadly. "You're already learning that." Then she turned and walked away. Just like that. No fight. No struggle. No dramatic ending. Only rain and silence. By the time security moved, she was gone. Disappearing into the darkness. Just like she intended. The ride home was quiet. Ethan fell asleep against Amara's shoulder halfway through. Exhaustion had finally defeated fear. Amara stared out the window. Damien sat opposite her. Neither spoke. There was too much between them now. Finally he broke the silence. "I'm sorry." She laughed once. No humor. "For which part?" The answer never came. Because there were too many. The marriage. The lies. The danger. The k********g. Everything. When the SUV finally stopped outside her apartment building, she stepped out carrying Ethan. Damien followed. Rain had softened into a light drizzle. "Amara." She stopped. Not because she wanted to. Because his voice sounded different. She turned. For a moment neither spoke. Then Damien said quietly, "I'm going away for a while." Something tightened unexpectedly inside her chest. "Why?" His eyes held hers. "Because what happened tonight isn't over." She already knew that. "I can protect you better from a distance." The words should have comforted her. Instead they felt like goodbye. She looked away first. "Take care of yourself." A faint smile touched his face. "That almost sounded like concern." "Don't push your luck." For the first time that night, something warm appeared in his eyes. Then he stepped back. The SUV doors closed. The convoy disappeared into the rain. Amara stood there watching until the last taillight vanished. Only then did she go inside. She told herself she was relieved. That Ethan was safe. That Damien was gone. That life could finally return to normal. But deep down she already knew better. Because some storms didn't end when the rain stopped. Sometimes they simply disappeared long enough to gather strength. And three weeks later, when strange men began watching her again, Damien Vale was nowhere to be found.
