They said that on a clear day you could see the twin towers of Durham Cathedral, 12 miles away, from the tower on the corner of the south wing of Exham Hall, and presumably vice versa. Although the only time, recently, I climbed to the top of the tower of the Cathedral, I couldn't see Exham Hall at all and very nearly got blown clear across the county for my pains, the wind fairly whistled up the Wear Valley from the east coast and so if you ever planned on climbing the tower at Durham Cathedral—and it’s well worth the climb, and the coronary—make sure your wig is well glued on.
