I step into the arena, the air is filled with magic of high magnitude . The floor beneath me glimmers , reacting to the energies swirling above our heads. Every student in my class is already here, forming a circle around the raised platform where we are to perform. The judges' seats made of gold and obsidian, robes embroidered with satin and Jewels that glimmers as if it's alive.
I don't even know if I'm ready for this.
I, Mara and Vera walk over to our platforms, waiting for our turn.
The wind brushes against my skin , carrying the scent of ozone and burning herbs from the students who have already begun testing small sparks and currents in practice.
Mara releases water from her palms, making them into a circle and into enchanting shapes, she possesses strong water powers ,Vera on the other hand controls insects, quite weird but fascinating.
I close my eyes and draw in a deep breath, forcing my nerves to still, trying to remind myself that this is what I came here for, this is why I survived the bullying, and the endless mockery.
The competition is brutally complex, each of us must demonstrate our abilities in a controlled environment, showing mastery, creativity, and precision. Some students manipulate fire, sending streams of flames curling into the sky. Others bend water, ice forming in spirals before dissolving into mist. Air flows like ribbons, twisting around giant pillars, and earth rises from the floor in boulders that hover before settling back down.
Every student is born with a magical power, and here, at Obsidian High, power and wealth decide everything. Some can control human muscles, bending others to their will this is known as a forbidden and dangerous ability . Some can manipulate blood. Most students are children of influential families, their names echoing across the kingdom. And then there is me, Nyra, lowborn.
My power is rare, exactly why I am here, why I won the scholarship out of thousands of other students who applied, that is why I earned a place in this palace of elites, I possess the powers of the four elements, water, fire, earth, Air, I also control the birds. Impressive right?
I glance around the arena, trying to observe the others. All are poised, confident, their eyes gleaming with arrogance. And then I see her, Seraphine Vale, flawless, pale-skinned, the golden queen of Obsidian High. Her smile is sharp, almost cruel, her eyes filled with calculation. She has always looked down on me, whispered behind my back, laughed at my small failures, I know she intends to make this competition a personal war.
The instructor raises her hands, releasing energy into the air.
"Today, you demonstrate your command over your chosen element. Remember, this is not only about power, but control, and Creativity. Impress the council, and you may rise in ranking , fail, and you will return to your insignificance."
My stomach tightens, Insignificance is not an option.
I draw a deep breath, feeling the raw energy swirling inside me, my power is not like theirs. It does not bend naturally to my will, sometimes I lose control and it goes, I must focus, shape it, and at least hide my imperfections.
Seraphine steps forward first. Flames escalates from her fingertips, moving like serpents. They rise high into the arena, swirling, different shapes, different sparkles, people gasp in awe, she does all this without burning the platform
"Impressive," I mutter
The crowd murmurs, impressed, and I see the judges nodding. She smiles at me over her shoulder, sharp and condescending.
"Watch and learn," she hisses softly.
I roll my eyes .
Why does she pick on me, she is better than me so why?
I swallow, my heart racing , mind full of tension and fear, I step onto the platform, I feel that arena around me, every gaze and every whisper , I feel the surge in my veins, the wild energy flowing through me,
"Control Nyra, please control," I mutter to myself. closing my eyes. The wind stirs, and I raise my hand.
The first movement is subtle, . I extend my hand, feeling the currents move through . The judges lean in, curiously watching . I open my eyes, letting my power flow out. A winding of raw energy surges above the arena, rustling with heat and light, but I shape it beautifully , directing my magic like water through a channel.
I hear Gasps through the crowd. Seraphine shoots and angry gaze. Taking my concentration off her, I narrow my concentration,, adding finesse, bending the energy into beautiful patterns, the air itself surges with power, dancing around the platform without touching the floor.
And then she strikes. Seraphine throws a spell toward me, trying to disrupt my concentration. I feel tingles in my fingers, a disturbance trying to break my concentration and rhythm, for a moment I almost falter, I bite my lip, forcing control, letting my magic absorb the shock, I alchemise it and transmute it into my magic, making crescent moving through the air. She tries again, and again, with every attempt, I receive and transmute it .
I feel my confidence surge and the rush of magic in my blood streams, from the corner of my eye i see Seraphine, for the first time she falters , her eyes widens in disbelief and disappointment, the fact that her magic can't hold a candle light to mine, and I cannot stop the small, triumphant grin on my lips as the crowd cheers .
From the balcony, I notice movement.looking up I see him, Kael.
He is leaning slightly against a pillar, watching, for a moment our eyes meet, he smiles, just a little, I feel chills rush through my spine, my pulse picks a beat as I move my gaze immediately.
My chest erupts with half excitement, and half fear.
I hear whispers. "Did you see the scholarship girl?" "Her control is unbelievable." "She's… powerful." I do not allow myself to falter, though my heart races at the sudden attention. I am used to invisibility, to being ignored, but now, even for a moment, I am noticed.
I scurry off to Mara and Vera who stood at the side
"You were amazing today," Mara said, lowering her voice. "I mean… I didn't even think you could pull something like that off."
"Same," Vera added quickly. "When you started, I thought you'd mess up, but that presentation? It was flawless. The control, the flow everything."
I blinked, surprised. "You really think so?"
"Think so?" Mara scoffed softly. "You outdid the class."
Vera nodded. "Honestly, you proved us wrong. And I'm glad you did."
The judges nod, exchanging glances, and I feel a thrill and excitement at their acknowledgment. My power is raw, it took me a lot to control it, my legs feel weak from the impact and effort used, surprisingly it bent at my command. Every swirl of energy, every dart of magic I let out, proved my worth at least to some certain extent, no matter my financial status, I know I measure up in power.
Seraphine steps back, annoyance written on her face, her eyes fixed toward me again. I meet her gaze , holding it, refusing to let her intimidation shake me. Her power is strong, yes, but she lacks the raw surge of magic, but me, I let it flow, letting the judges see the difference between inherited elegance and true force.
The final act is subtle yet exciting . The students take turns on the final stage of their presentation, it gets to my turn, I summon an orb of concentrated energy, shimmering with fire and light. I direct it upward, holding it for a moment, suspending it in balance, and then explode it outward into the arena. Applause rises from some of the students, murmurs of awe from others. The judges scribble notes, with approval on their faces .
I step back from the platform, chest heaving as I gasp for air. My eyes scans the balcony again. Kael is gone, but the memory of his brief smile makes my stomach swirl briefly.
Seraphine mutters something under her breath and storms off the platform, but I see the fear or doubt in her eyes , I survived her sabotage, but the fact that she tries to sabotage me is what I can't wrap my head around, I'm no competitor when it comes to her, her elegance and grace outdoes my tenfold.
The next student steps forward, and I slip back into the background, letting others perform while i catch my breath. The arena continues to buzz, each student eager to show their mastery, the cheers and and hails of the students, erupting through the air.
Even as the lesson ends, even as students leave the platform, whispers continue to follow me. People wondering how I am able to control such power, some whisper with envy, some with awe.
Mara walks to my side, I taking my hand
"You did welol baby," she praises
"You did better," I reply smiling at her .
Vera sprints towards us from behind,
"Wait for me you two," she pants
