weight of power

Later that night, Isabella sat on the edge of the bed, deep in thought, a hand protectively resting over her stomach. Nathan stepped out of the shower, towel slung around his waist, and caught the faraway look in her eyes. Nathan said, "You’re doing that thing again—thinking too much." Isabella turned to look at him with a soft smile, though the worry was still in her eyes. "I can’t help it. There’s too much going on, and now with the baby… I just want us to be safe. I want them to pay. But we have to be smart about it." Nathan walked over and crouched in front of her, gently brushing a strand of hair from her face. "We will be. We’re not alone anymore, Isabella. We have each other. And now… we have something even bigger to fight for." A soft knock came on the door. They both exchanged a quick look. Nathan grabbed a robe and went to check. It was their tech-savvy friend, Kelvin, the same person who helped set up the security surveillance that once exposed Raymond’s illegal dealings. Kelvin said, "Sorry for dropping in unannounced, but I have something you’ll want to see." Nathan gestured him in. "What is it?" Kelvin opened his laptop and turned it toward them. "While I was running a trace on the Roland family’s activity online, I found a pattern. There’s an offshore account tied to Roland. He’s been moving large funds quietly—possibly paying people off, hiding assets. I think we can trace it back to the early days of Marcus Enterprises being stolen." Isabella stood up, stunned. "You mean, proof? Proof that he was behind the plot against my father?" Kelvin nodded. "And if we dig deeper, we might even find the connection to that car accident your father had after the court case." Nathan clenched his fist. "This is what we need. This is how we bring him down. With solid evidence." Isabella said, "We’ll expose him at the press conference. Let him walk into his own destruction while thinking he’s won." Kelvin added, "It won’t be easy. He has people. He’s watching everything. We’ll need to set up a secure channel, and probably move fast. If he gets wind of this…" Nathan finished, "Then we’ll be the targets." Isabella said firmly, "Let him come. I’m not running anymore." Suddenly, Isabella felt a strange pull in her lower stomach. She gasped and placed both hands over her belly. Nathan rushed to her side. "Hey, hey, what’s wrong? Is it the baby?" Isabella nodded, a flicker of fear in her eyes. "It’s okay… I think it’s just a cramp. Maybe stress." Nathan guided her gently to the bed. "You’re done with the stress tonight. We’ll handle the rest." Kelvin said, "I’ll get started on the trace. But you two… get some rest. You’ll need your strength." As Kelvin left, Isabella looked at Nathan, the weight of everything finally catching up to her. "Nathan… promise me no matter what happens… we won’t let this darkness touch our baby." Nathan leaned forward and kissed her forehead. "I promise. I’ll protect both of you with everything I have." And for a moment, in that quiet room lit only by a bedside lamp, they found peace. But deep down, they both knew—the war was just beginning. _______ At the Roland estate, laughter filled the air as glasses clinked in celebration. The conference to officially announce the merger between Marcus Enterprises and Maxwell Enterprises was only a few days away, and the family was in high spirits. Angela twirled a glass of wine in her hand, beaming. "Finally, after everything… we’re so close to sealing this victory. Father, you’ll be the most powerful man in the business world. Two empires… under your command." Mr. Roland gave a smug smile. "Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The conference is just a formality. But yes… once the ink dries, we’ll control both Marcus and Maxwell Enterprises. And no one—no one—will stand in our way." Mrs. Roland added, "I’ve already contacted the press. The media will eat this up. The image of unity, power, legacy. Our family will be revered." Angela smirked. "And as for Isabella? She’ll finally understand that she never stood a chance. She lost the company. She lost the legacy. And soon, she’ll lose Nathan too." In the corner of the room, Alina sat quietly, her expression unreadable. Her fingers danced slowly around the rim of her glass, eyes fixated on nothing in particular. Angela turned to her. "Alina? You should be more excited. You’ve always wanted this—being at the top with Raymond by your side. You’re going to be the future Mrs. Maxwell… though you always wanted Nathan, but Raymond isn't bad for a start ,are you excited?" Alina gave a small smile. "Oh, I’m excited… just in my own way." Mr. Roland chuckled. "She’s always been the quiet strategist. Let her be." But behind her silence, Alina’s mind was spinning. She wasn’t in this for Raymond. She never truly was. Raymond was just… a piece on the board. A pawn. And he had no idea. Later that night, Alina met with Raymond privately in the garden, candlelight flickering between them. "You’re doing so well," Alina whispered, brushing her fingers lightly down his arm. "Soon, you’ll be the sole heir to the entire Maxwell fortune. And once your parents are out of the way… nothing will stop you." Raymond, drunk with pride and desire, smiled. "I couldn’t have done any of this without you. Once it’s all ours… we’ll share it together." Alina leaned in close, her lips almost brushing his. "Of course we will…" But as Raymond leaned in to kiss her, Alina’s eyes flicked open—cold, calculating. Because in her mind, she already knew her next move. And Raymond? He was just another step toward her own silent, deadly climb to power.
