The ground shuddered with a deep, subterranean roar as the massive shadow-stalker uncoiled its multi-limbed frame from the skeletal remains of the watchtower, plunging headfirst into the choking gray ash below. Its jagged claws carved deep, smoking trenches into the hillside as it tracked their scent with terrifying, unnatural speed.
"Move! Now!" Vane roared, his voice cutting through the rising wind like a blade. He shoved Kaelen forcefully ahead of him down the steep, treacherous decline, refusing to let panic paralyze the young scout.
The descent into the lower gorge was an absolute nightmare of shifting shale, unstable footing, and jagged obsidian rocks that threatened to slice through boot leather and skin alike. Kaelen's breath came in ragged, burning gasps. He slipped twice in rapid succession, his palms tearing wide open against the razor-sharp stone as he scrambled blindly into the swirling dust and dark. Behind them, the monster's screech pierced the air a horrific, metallic shriek that sounded like grinding iron and set every nerve in their bodies on edge. The creature was gaining fast, driven into an unstoppable frenzy by the metallic tang of fresh blood and the primal panic of its prey.
Lycus planted his heavy boots firmly upon a raised rocky outcrop, his round spectacles flashing under the bruised, violet-tinged twilight. With a fierce, guttural grunt that strained every fiber of his being, he hauled his massive iron broadsword from its scabbard and brought it down with devastating, calculated force right as the beast lunged out of the haze.
The dark steel blade struck the creature's heavily armored shoulder with a deafening crash, showering the dark canyon walls in cascading blue sparks. The monster shrieked in sudden agony, its momentum checked as it stumbled sideways into a towering pile of crumbling stone and ancient rubble. But the sheer force of the impact and the violent recoil shot a blinding wave of white-hot pain straight through Lycus's old shoulder wound. He bit back a sharp curse, his teeth clenching hard as warm blood instantly soaked through the dark, heavy fabric of his coat.
"No time to bleed, Lycus!" Vane shouted over the howling wind, abandoning any pretense of caution as he caught up to the scholar. The captain grabbed Lycus by his uninjured arm, hauling him bodily downward into the narrow, winding switchback trail of the lower canyon before the beast could recover its footing.
