Once the heavy handcart was safely secured on the stone-paved plateau away from the treacherous drop, Mara finally relaxed her grip, sliding her crossbow back into its shoulder harness. She looked over the three exhausted survivors with a new level of cautious respect in her dark eyes. "You've got grit, I'll give you that," Mara said, nodding toward the winding path below where the echoes of the monster had finally died away. "Most folks would have panicked and tumbled down the gorge when that beast was snapping at their heels. Come inside before the night wind brings the frost up from the gorge. We've got warm broth and dry bandages waiting." Kaelen nearly collapsed with sheer relief as they stepped inside the stone-walled shelter of the upper station. The air smelled faintly of burning scrub-wood and salted meat a heavenly, civilized scent after weeks of ash, sulfur, and absolute desolation. As old Thomas gently dressed Kaelen’s torn, bleeding arm and Vane patched his bruised and dented armor near the crackling hearth, Lycus walked slowly over to the open window frame. He looked out over the sprawling, fertile green fields and the distant, lantern-lit cottages of the river basin glowing peacefully in the deep twilight. The immediate danger had passed, but as Lycus stared into the deepening night, he knew all too well that the Ashen Waste never truly let go of its own.
