The thick, emerald canopy of the timberland gradually began to thin out as the afternoon sun dipped lower toward the western horizon, bleeding long, amber rays across the damp, mossy earth. The sharp scent of pine needles and damp soil slowly gave way to the rich, unmistakable aroma of woodsmoke, wet clay, and churning river water. Kaelen wiped a streak of soot and sweat from his forehead, his legs feeling like lead as they crested a low, rolling ridge. Below them, nestled snugly in a wide, sweeping bend of the great southern river, lay Oakhaven a frontier settlement born from the ashes of the old world. It wasn't much to look at: a cluster of sturdy log-and-stone cabins ringed by a high, palisade wall built from salvaged timber and rusted railway iron. Smoke curled lazily from a dozen stone chimneys into the evening air, and the faint, reassuring clatter of livestock and human voices drifted up from the valley floor. After weeks of surviving the desolate, monster-infested ruins of the north, the sight of an inhabited village felt like a mirage. "Stay close and keep your hoods pulled down," Vane warned quietly, resting a gloved hand on the hilt of his short sword as they approached the wide dirt path leading down the slope. "Frontier settlements don't take kindly to armed strangers wandering in right after a mechanical sentinel goes down in their timberline. Let Lycus do the talking." The scholar adjusted his spectacles, his expression as stoic and unreadable as ever. He reached back to ensure his massive broadsword was securely fastened beneath his heavy dust-stained coat, hiding the dark steel from casual view. As they reached the heavy timber gates of Oakhaven, two local guards stepped out to bar their path. Both wore boiled-leather vests and carried iron-tipped spears, their eyes sharp and instantly suspicious as they scanned the trio from head to toe—taking in Vane’s dented military armor, Lycus’s imposing frame, and Kaelen’s bandaged, dirt-streaked clothes. "State your business in Oakhaven," the older guard demanded, planting his spear shaft firmly into the dirt path. "The outer river road has been closed to unverified travelers since the ash-storms started shifting south last week." Lycus stepped forward, his voice a calm, steady rumble that commanded immediate attention. "We are travelers from the northern pass, seeking shelter before nightfall. We carry no plague, and we seek no trouble. We only wish to trade what salvage we have for a hot meal and a dry place to rest." The guard narrowed his eyes, clearly unconvinced by the smooth answer, but before he could bark another refusal, a sharp voice rang out from behind the palisade wall. "Let them pass, Miller," a woman called out sharply. The heavy wooden gate creaked open a fraction, revealing a weathered woman with sharp hazel eyes and a scarred cheek, wearing a heavy canvas coat over a leather tunic. She looked directly at Lycus, a knowing, weary smile touching the corners of her mouth. "Word travels fast down the river current," the woman said, stepping closer as she inspected the travelers. "Especially when an old military-grade sentinel blows its core three miles up the ridge. You boys made quite a bit of noise out there today. I'm Captain Elena of the River Watch." Vane stiffened slightly at the mention of the military rank, while Lycus simply offered a polite, measured nod. "We only cleared our path, Captain," Lycus replied evenly. Elena chuckled, a dry, raspy sound, and gestured toward the open interior of the village where warm lantern light was beginning to flicker through the twilight. "Well, anyone who can put down a rusted iron-sentinel and walk away is either a fool or a seasoned survivor. Both are welcome in Oakhaven for tonight—at a price. Come inside before the river mists start rolling in."
