About ten or so people were sitting cross-legged on the purple carpet of Deborah’s first-floor apartment. In the centre was a coffee table, on which was a small figurine of Krishna. A garland of fresh flowers around his neck and at his feet. There was a sandalwood incense stick burning somewhere, but Deep was not sure where. His entrance into the room attracted the attention of all the guests. Deborah pulled him into the circle and announced, ‘Friends, this is Deep. We met at the Holy Section of Book People yesterday.’ Polite giggles could be heard all around in response to her stress on ‘Holy’. ‘He is from Kolkata. Deep, let me introduce you to my friends. This is Cindy; that’s Anne, and that’s David. There’s Aditi. That’s Veena. Ashish, Veena’s husband. Sanjay and Zach. There’s Nitu.
