THE VACANT STALLS WERE still clustered along the perimeters of the road leading to the exit, forgotten reminders of the day’s activities. We’d been slowing down as we neared them. Clusters of people still moved idly about, either coming in late or milling around in preparation for leaving, and I had a half formed idea that we could slip in amongst them and lose ourselves until a better plan revealed itself. Not easy to get lost, though, with huge spotlights turning the entire area into daytime once again. I had been starting to wonder why our pursuers hadn’t managed to catch up yet.
