Chapter 7: The First Threat

1358 Words
The Valentino mansion had always been a place built on silence, discipline, and control, but that morning the atmosphere felt different, as if the entire estate had suddenly become aware that something dangerous was approaching. Aria noticed the change immediately when she walked down the grand staircase and saw several security guards moving around the mansion with serious expressions on their faces. The employees who normally carried out their duties quietly were now whispering among themselves, and even Elena, who usually brought warmth into the cold environment, seemed more cautious than before. Aria had only been inside the mansion for a short time, yet she was beginning to understand that in Dante Valentino’s world, peace was never guaranteed. There was always a hidden enemy, a secret waiting to be discovered, or a threat that could appear without warning. She entered the dining room and found Dante already sitting at the long wooden table, reading through several documents while drinking his morning coffee. The sunlight coming through the large windows illuminated the expensive room, but Dante’s expression remained as serious as ever. He looked completely composed, like nothing could disturb him, but Aria had started noticing the small details that others probably ignored. The way his fingers tightened slightly whenever he read troubling information, the way his eyes became colder when something concerned him, and the way he always carried the weight of every problem alone. She still did not know whether to trust him, but she was beginning to realize that Dante Valentino was not simply a powerful man who enjoyed control; he was a man constantly preparing for the next disaster. Aria stopped near the table and looked at him. “Are you always this cheerful in the morning, or is this only your special personality for people you trap inside your mansion?” Dante slowly lifted his eyes from the document. “I see you woke up with the same attitude you had yesterday.” Aria pulled out a chair and sat down across from him. “And I see you woke up believing you are still in charge of everything.” Dante placed the document down. “Because I am.” She gave him a disbelieving look. “You really have no problem admitting that, do you?” “No.” His simple answer annoyed her. Most people would try to defend themselves or pretend they were different, but Dante did not hide who he was. He accepted the fact that he controlled situations because, in his world, hesitation could cost lives. Aria found that frustrating because she wanted to believe he was simply arrogant, but every time she saw the seriousness behind his decisions, she realized there was more to him than she wanted to admit. Before she could respond, the dining room doors opened and Marco entered with a file in his hand. His expression immediately told Dante that whatever information he carried was not good news. Aria watched as the atmosphere changed between the two men, almost as if they had their own silent language that allowed them to understand the seriousness of a situation without needing many words. Marco placed the file on the table and looked at Dante. “We received a message this morning.” Dante’s expression became colder. “From who?” Marco hesitated. “We don’t know.” Aria looked between them. “What kind of message?” Neither man answered immediately, and that silence immediately made her uncomfortable. Dante opened the file and removed a photograph from inside. His expression remained controlled, but something in his eyes changed when he looked at the picture. Aria leaned forward slightly, trying to see what had caused such a reaction, but Dante quickly placed the photograph back on the table. “What was it?” she asked. Dante ignored the question. “Marco, increase security around the mansion.” Aria frowned. “Dante.” He looked at her. “I asked what it was.” For a moment, he remained silent, as if deciding whether he should tell her the truth. Then he answered. “It was a warning.” Her expression changed. “A warning about what?” “About you.” The room became completely quiet. Aria stared at him, trying to understand his words. “Why would anyone send a warning about me?” Dante leaned back in his chair, his face serious. “Because they know you are here.” A cold feeling moved through her body. She had known she was in danger, but hearing those words made the situation feel real. She had spent the last day thinking about escaping, returning to university, and pretending that none of this had happened. But now she understood that the danger was not something she could simply walk away from. Someone out there was watching her, someone who knew she was connected to Dante Valentino, and someone who wanted her to know that they could reach her. “I don’t understand,” Aria said quietly. “Why me? I don’t know anything about your business. I don’t know anything about your enemies.” Dante looked at her carefully. “Because sometimes people do not come after someone because of what they know.” He paused. “Sometimes they come after someone because of who they are.” Aria felt those words deeply. Because once again, everything came back to her family name. “Is this because of my father?” Dante did not answer immediately. And that answer was enough. Aria pushed her chair back and stood up. “I need to talk to him.” Dante immediately looked at her. “No.” Her eyes narrowed. “You cannot keep stopping me from seeing my own father.” “I can, and I will.” Anger flashed across her face. “You really think you own my life.” “No.” Dante stood as well, his voice becoming calmer. “I think I understand the danger better than you do.” Aria stepped closer. “And I think you are using danger as an excuse to control me.” The words hung between them. Marco looked away, knowing he had walked into a conversation only Dante and Aria could handle. Dante stared at her for several seconds, and Aria expected anger, but instead she saw something unexpected. Concern. Real concern. “You think I enjoy keeping you here?” Dante asked quietly. Aria did not answer. “Do you think I want another person connected to my family’s tragedy walking into danger because of something they never chose?” His voice was not harsh anymore. It was tired. For a moment, Aria saw the man beneath the reputation. The man who had lost something. The man who was afraid of losing again. Before she could respond, Elena entered the room and immediately noticed the tension between them. “What happened?” Marco looked at her. “Someone sent a warning.” Elena’s expression changed. “About Aria?” Dante nodded. Elena looked at Aria with concern. “You need to understand something. Dante may be difficult, controlling, and impossible to argue with…” Aria looked at Dante. “That is exactly what I have noticed.” Elena almost smiled. “But when he protects someone, he does it completely.” Dante looked away. He clearly did not like the conversation. Aria noticed that. And strangely, she found herself wondering why a man like Dante Valentino, a man who had everything money could buy, looked so uncomfortable whenever someone mentioned that he cared. That evening, as Aria stood alone near the mansion windows watching the sunset over the city, she realized something that frightened her more than the threats. She was beginning to see Dante Valentino differently. Not as the monster everyone described. Not as the enemy she wanted to escape from. But as a complicated man carrying secrets, pain, and a darkness she wanted to understand. And somewhere outside the walls of the Valentino mansion, someone was preparing to destroy everything Dante had built. Including the one person he had unexpectedly decided to protect.
